Q. I'd like to be able to do CPR, but I'm squeamish about doing mouth-to-mouth on a stranger. Any suggestions?

There is an emergency technique called Hands-Only CPR. This is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It consists of two easy steps: Call 9-1-1 and push hard and fast in the center of the victim's chest. That means 100/minute uninterrupted compressions until paramedics arrive.

KAREN CIMMS/TIMES NEWS Fettucine Primavera Alfredo goes together quickly. If you don't have fettucine on hand, spaghetti works just as well.

I had every intention of making homemade pizza for dinner last Friday.

I set out the ingredients for the crust, prepared the yeast, and then combined it all and began kneading. I can't tell you exactly what went wrong, but that pizza dough was just not happening.

We don't eat meat on Fridays during Lent, so that meant no leftovers. I was too tired and too hungry to give the pizza dough another try, so I pouted for awhile, considered take out, and then stood in front of the refrigerator, looking for some inspiration.

Q. I have found that I don't sleep as well as I used to when I was younger. How common is this?

Many people believe that poor sleep is a normal part of aging, but it is not. Sleep patterns change as we age, but disturbed sleep and waking up tired every day are not part of normal aging.

Seniors need about the same amount of sleep as younger adults seven to nine hours a night.

KAREN CIMMS/TIMES NEWS When winter doesn't seem to want to let go, Tomatoey Vegetable Beef Soup is the perfect answer to that bone-chilling cold.

I had something totally different planned for this week, but the biting temperatures outside my mountaintop home had me longing for soup.

January, which was the first month of this column, featured a new soup recipe every week. As March arrived, I hoped it would be accompanied by warmer weather, but it seems that in spite of Punxatawney Phil's prognostication for an early spring, Mother Nature is in no hurry to send up that first tentative crocus in my neighborhood.

Q. What chemicals in the environment have a real impact upon our health?

There are way too many to cover. Here are a few important ones:

Lead: Paint chips, dust, fumes and water containing lead can get into your body. Even small amounts of lead in your system can impede learning and generate behavior changes. Large quantities of lead can be fatal. A simple blood test can alert you before lead poisoning causes significant problems.

We grew up eating Whimpies on a regular basis, and until recently, I thought the name and the dish were my mother's creation.

I assumed, because it contains hamburger meat, she named them after, Whimpy, the character from the old Popeye cartoons.

Q. Episodes of depression seem to be common over several generations in my family. Is depression genetic?

There is substantial evidence that depression is a hereditary disease. A depression gene known as 5-HTTLPR has been found.

The World Health Organization reports that about 121 million people worldwide suffer from depression. WHO estimates that depression will become the first cause of disease burden worldwide by the year 2020. Disease burden is defined as years patients must live with a disability.

KAREN CIMMS/TIMES NEWS Mom's Pot Roast has been a favorite for generations in our family.

My number one comfort food? My mother's pot roast.

Whether I was sick or sad, or celebrating a birthday when my mother asked what I would like her to make, my answer was almost always the same: pot roast.

My mother's pot roast is also a favorite of two of my daughters.

When Margaux had her first child, I remember having two pot roasts simmering on the stove at the same time one for dinner that evening and one for the freezer, so she wouldn't have to cook every night.

In addition to being simple, this dish is very tasty, and perfect for company.

The average American drinks over 400 cups of coffee a year, so how this popular beverage affects our health is an important issue.

Let's start with the bad part.

For the general population, the evidence suggests that coffee drinking doesn't have any serious detrimental health effects.

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day.

Instead of heart-shaped, we're going heart-smart with Ted and Lori Larizzio of Jim Thorpe. The fact that this pair is the sweetest couple I've ever met (they were high school sweethearts and have known each other since kindergarten!), makes it a slam dunk.

When I came up with the idea for this food column, Lori was one of the first people I wanted to feature. After meeting her and Ted when I did a story about them in May of 2011 (http://www.tnonline.com/2011/may/06/keeping-his-memory-alive), we became Facebook friends.
