Carl Hafer

Carl Hafer of Tamaqua, recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Born on Sept. 21, 1922, he was the son of the late Raymond and Esther Hafer of Lewistown Valley.

Carl and his wife Jean recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary.

Carl served in the Navy during World War II. He retired from Western Electric, Allentown after 39 years.

The Hafers have four children: Ester Jean, Carl (who is deceased), Ted and Greg. They have 10 grandchildren (two of whom are deceased), and 11 great-grandchildren.

Edith Smith

Edith Smith of Jim Thorpe recently celebrated her 90th birthday. The former Edith Heckman, she was born on Sept. 14, 1922.

She was married to the late Floyd Smith for 53 years.

Her birthday dinner celebration was attended by her children Cheryl (Smith) Popek of Lehighton and Randall Smith of Jim Thorpe as well as their spouses.

Also honoring their grandmother were Niccole (Popek) Burke, Rachel Popek, Katie Smith and Lee Smith, along with great-grandchildren Faith and Sawyer Chrisman and Maggie Burke. Also in attendance was Edith's best friend Lillian Popek.

Matilda "Tilly" Dreisbach

Matilda "Tilly" Dreisbach, a resident of The Village at Palmerton, celebrated her 96th birthday recently. She was born on Sept. 14, 1916 in Mahanoy City. She later moved to Slatington with her husband, Robert.

Tilly says that her greatest hobby was sewing because her mother was a dressmaker and taught her all the "tricks of the trade." Her favorite saying is, "The old gray mare ain't what she used to be," even though she has no gray hair at all.

Tilly enjoys listening to music especially when someone plays the organ on her floor at The Village at Palmerton.

Blaise Schweibinz

Blaise Schweibinz, a resident at the Village at Palmerton, celebrated his 86th birthday on Sept. 24.

He was born and raised in Lehighton but, if asked, he'll gladly tell you he found the best wife ever in Palmerton.

He and his late wife Evangeline raised two sons Terry and Larry.

Blaise served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Ranger. Afterward, he worked at Air Products as a machinist until retirement.

Later, to keep busy, he worked part-time for Rentschler Auto Parts.

Mary Taschler

Mary Taschler of Palmerton recently celebrated her 85th birthday with a surprise birthday party Saturday, Aug. 11 at the Blue Ridge Country Club.

Born Aug. 11, 1927, Mary has lived her entire life in Palmerton, graduating from Palmerton High School and the Palmerton Hospital School of Nursing. She retired from a career as a registered nurse at Palmerton Hospital.

Mary is an active member of St. Vladimir's Greek Catholic Church and has served as a leader of the pierogi lady effort for many years.

Elaine "Dolly" Watto

Elaine "Dolly" (West) Watto recently celebrated her 90th birthday. She was born on Aug. 3, 1922.

She attended school in East Mauch Chunk, and is a lifetime resident of East Mauch Chunk, which is now Jim Thorpe.

Dolly is a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and has been active in her community over the years.

She continues to conduct worship services at a local convalescent home for the elderly, and she still tends her own garden.

Lois K. (Schoenberger) Claus

Lois K. (Schoenberger) Claus of Lehighton will be 90 years young on Saturday.

Since her birth on July 28, 1922, Claus has had many interesting adventures, which she recalls with ease.

Born in Palmerton to the late John W. and Luella (Rex) Schoenberger, Claus lived in Lehighton until she was 6. She then moved with her family to White Haven; Belvidere, N.J., Phillipsburg, N.J.; Easton; and Lehighton. At the age of 12, she and her mother lost their home in Easton when the Roxy Theater burned down.

Mary (Betty) Dolan

Mary (Betty) Dolan turned 93 years young recently.

She was born on June 21, 1919 in Tamaqua, the daughter of the late Alex and Evelyn (Herman) Oliver. She still resides in Tamaqua, in a four-generation household, with her daughter Sue, her granddaughter Erica, and her great-grandson, 2-year-old Zakk.

Betty holds the honor of being the oldest resident on her street.

Betty and her late husband, John, who passed away in April of 1995, also have a son, Terry, who lives in Bethlehem.

Doris Sturtevant

Doris Sturtevant, a resident of Heritage Hill Senior Community is celebrating her 98th birthday today. She was born in Weatherly on June 27, 1914, the daughter of Harry and Mary (Rehrig) Wertman.

She was married to Robert B. Sturtevant until his death in 1982. They have a son, Robert H. Sturtevant, Weatherly.

Doris attended school in Weatherly and graduated from Weatherly High School in 1931.

Following graduation, she worked in the family business, Wertman's Hardware Store, with her father and brother, Bill.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS Dorothy Holmgren accepts a citation from PA State Rep. Mick Carroll, in recognition of her 100th birthday.

Dorothy Moore Holmgren of Kunkletown, born May 6, 1912, recently celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at a party hosted by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Anne and Bill Clausen at their Kunkletown home.

Nearly 100 guests attended, including Dorothy's four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, coming from all over the United States. One guest even stopped by on his way home from China.
