Anna Temchatin

Anna Temchatin, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community, Weatherly, celebrated her 92nd birthday on Dec. 27.

She was born in 1920 in Hazleton, where she has lived her entire life. She had two sisters, Mary and Helen, and a brother, John, who passed away in recent years.

Her husband of almost 40 years, Wassil, passed away in 1989.

Anna has two sons, Basil and Jack; two grandsons, and four great-grandchildren.

She is a devout Catholic and a member of St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazleton.

Anna Trudich

Anna T. Trudich celebrated her 100th birthday recently.

She was born in Lansford on Nov. 27, 1912.

She lived in Summit Hill, West Virginia and White Bear, but most of her life she has lived in Tamaqua. Anna was married to John Trudich Sr. until his passing.

She is a member of St. Peter and Paul's Catholic in Tamaqua.

Anna has six children: John Trudich Jr., Eleanor Hodge, Betty Peper, Peter Trudich Sr., Rose Beiswenger and Michael Trudich. She also has four grandchildren: Michael Hodge, Shirley Ann French, Peter Trudich Jr. and Desiree Deetz.

Violet Kresge

Violet Kresge, a resident of The Village at Palmerton, recently celebrated her 93rd birthday recently.

She was born Nov. 27, 1919 in Fall River, Mass., in the early morning hours of Thanksgiving Day. She says with a smile, "I guess I changed my mother's dinner plans for sure!"

Her family moved to Connecticut where she lived until joining the Air Force, where she served as a supply clerk.

When asked why the Air Force, her reply was simple.

Josephine Holman

Josephine (Smith) Holman, a resident of Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, is celebrating her 93rd birthday today.

She was born on Nov. 16, 1919 in Yorkshire, England.

She has also resided in Clearwater, Fla.; Willow Grove, Sandy Run, Hazleton and Weatherly.

Josephine was married to William Holman for 62 years, until his passing in 2002.

She has a son, William Holman Jr. of Willow Grove, and a daughter, Nancy Shaw, who resided in Hartford, Conn. before her death in 2003.

Josephine has one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.

Helen Rhoades

Helen (Reimiller) Rhoades, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community, Weatherly, is celebrating her 93rd birthday. Born in Hazleton Nov. 16, 1919, she is the daughter of the late Clora and Charles Reimiller.

On Nov. 5, 1938, Helen wed Charles Rhoades, who died in 2004. They had three children: Clo-Ellen Rhoades Triano of Richmond, Va.; Charles Oscar Rhoades (deceased); and George Byron Rhoades, Weatherly.

Mary Bakos

Mary Bakos, a long time resident of Palmerton who now resides at The Village at Palmerton, celebrated her 94th birthday recently. She was born on Oct. 22, 1918.

She was one of six sisters who were very close knit. Their father passed away at the young age of 42, so the girls helped their mother with everything at home.

Mary remembers when her sister Goldie worked for Mrs. Haslum, an art teacher in Palmerton. Goldie arranged for Mary and their sister Erma to take lessons in painting with Mrs. Haslum. This would prove to be the sisters' bond.

Lois Holman

Lois Evelyn (Sands) Holman, a resident of Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, is celebrating her 99th birthday. She was born in Hazleton on Nov. 1, 1913.

Lois was married to Allan Williams for 47 years, until his death in 1979. She was married to David Holman for 10 years, until his passing in 2000.

She is a member of the Hazleton Chapter of the American Red Cross and received recognition for more than 50 years of service.

La Rue Smith

La Rue Smith, a resident of The Village at Palmerton, recently celebrated her 98th birthday. She was born on Oct. 17, 1914.

The daughter of Frank and Rista Strohl, she was born in Aquashicola on her parents' farm, like everyone else at that time. Her mom and dad instilled in her the appreciation of a hard day's work. They had a "truck patch" garden and grew all their own foods.

They raised chickens and pigs and even had a cow for milking. LaRue says that she had to take turns with her sister Pauline milking the cow twice a day.

Anna Ogozalek, formerly of Lansford, celebrated her 101st birthday on Friday. She is currently a guest at the Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Anna was born Oct. 26, 1911 to the late Joseph and Mary (Kocon) Porambo. She is the oldest of eight children.

She was married to the late Joseph Ogozalek and has three children: son Len Ogozalek, daughter Virginia Clemmer Zabo, and the late Joseph "Buddy" Ogozalek. She also has seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and 27 nieces and nephews.

Nevin Smith

Nevin Smith, a resident of The Village at Palmerton, celebrated his 91st birthday recently. He was born on Oct. 9, 1921.

Nevin, a retired World War II veteran, was drafted into the U.S. Army a week shy of his 21st birthday. He served in the 151st Infantry, Company G, as a rifleman from 1942-45. He was wounded twice in the line of duty and was discharged with a Purple Heart.

After the war he gained employment at Atlas Cement Company in Northampton, where he worked for 30 years prior to retirement.
