Gordon Chandler

Gordon Chandler, a resident at the Village at Palmerton, recently celebrated his 99th birthday. He was born on Feb. 4, 1914.

A native of Slatington, Gordon dropped out of high school in 10th grade to get a job to help his mom with the bills.

"I never missed a day of school … ever! Ten years of school and perfect attendance. But mom needed money so I had to leave," said Gordon.

He is a retiree of Bethlehem Steel, where he worked in the rolling mill.

Joseph F. Shalanski

Joseph F. Shalanski of Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, formerly of Conyngham, recently celebrated his 97th birthday. He was born in Warrior Run, Pa. on Feb. 1, 1916. He was one of five children.

Joseph graduated from Warrior Run High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as a Seaman on an LST (Landing Ship, Tank) during World War II; and received a number of combat medals as the ship saw action in both the European and Pacific theaters.

Genevieve Skavery

Genevieve Skavery, a resident of Mt. Carmel Nursing Home, celebrated her 95th birthday recently. She was born Jan. 26, 1918 to Stanley and Victoria Swatski of Mt. Carmel.

Genevieve and her husband Stanley, who worked as a coal miner, were married June 17, 1939 at St. Stanislaus Church in Shenandoah.

Ethel Cadugan

Ethel Cadugan, a resident of The Village at Palmerton, celebrated her 93rd birthday on Jan. 16.

Originally from Jim Thorpe, she was married to Woodrow Cadugan and was a sample maker for Berkley Bags when the factory operated in downtown Jim Thorpe.

"Wages were a lot lower but I worked there less than four years, just until I could afford to buy a washer," Ethel states.

"Many women did that at that time," Ethel says. "If you wanted something, you worked for it!"

Fern Horn, a resident of The Village at Palmerton, recently celebrated her 87th birthday. She was born on Jan. 23, 1926.

Previously from Slatington, Fern was an active member of the Meals on Wheels program.

"Delivering foods to shut-ins was so rewarding," Fern says looking back on her life. "You meet so many nice people who can live alone, but just don't want to cook or do the dishes anymore!"

Fern has one son Randy, who lives in Slatington.

Betty Serfass

Betty Serfass, a resident of The Village at Palmerton, celebrated her 86th birthday on Jan. 5.

She was married to Ervin Serfass, but "people just called him Reds," Betty says affectionately.

"That, naturally, was your nickname if you had red hair. We met when I was very young. I was off from school and went shopping with my mom to Mooney's Food Market here in Palmerton. Reds was working at the deli counter.

Agnes Limberg

Agnes Limberg, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community, Weatherly, is celebrating her 91st birthday tomorrow.

Born in Easton, Pa. on Jan. 22, 1922, Agnes was married to Laird Limberg for 32 years until his death in 1972.

Agnes has eight children: Michael Limberg, Hazleton; Dorothy Moser, Wayne, Pa.; Karen Wright, Neshanic Station, NJ.; Mary Thompson, New Tripoli; Patricia Limberg, Colleyville, Texas; Diane Piparata, Easton; Laird Limberg, San Diego California, and Jeffrey Limberg, Mesa Arizona.

She has 17 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

Walter Woods

Walter Woods, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community, Weatherly, recently celebrated his 92nd birthday. Born in Patterson, N.J. on Jan. 17, 1921 he was the son of the late Walter Woods and Jean Johnson.

He graduated from Hawthorne High School in 1939 and enlisted in the Air Corps. He served as a pilot during World War II and received a number of combat medals including: American Theater Medal, Air Medal with 3 Oak Clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal and Good Conduct medal.

Laura Getz

Laura Getz, a resident of The Village at Palmerton, celebrated her 85th birthday recently. She was born on Dec. 27, 1927.

The youngest of nine children, Laura was raised by her older sister Anna, as both their mother and father passed when Laura was very young.

At age 16, Laura moved in with her sister Tilly, who Laura says is responsible for introducing her to her husband, Luther Getz. Tilly was married to Luther's brother Warren. They invited Luther to dinner to meet Laura, and the rest is history, she says with a smile.

Albert Murphy

Albert Murphy, a resident of The Village at Palmerton, recently celebrated his 87th birthday. He was born on Dec. 27, 1925.

Born and raised in Effort, he was an auto mechanic, like his dad. At 18 he was drafted into the Army in 1943, but not before marrying his high school sweetheart Elaine before deployment.

He spent two years in Germany, just outside Berlin. He spent part of his service as a POW.

He was eventually released by the Russian Army and returned home where he and Elaine began their life.
