Helen Rhoades

Helen (Reimiller) Rhoades, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community, Weatherly, is celebrating her 93rd birthday. Born in Hazleton Nov. 16, 1919, she is the daughter of the late Clora and Charles Reimiller.

On Nov. 5, 1938, Helen wed Charles Rhoades, who died in 2004. They had three children: Clo-Ellen Rhoades Triano of Richmond, Va.; Charles Oscar Rhoades (deceased); and George Byron Rhoades, Weatherly.

Mary Bakos

Mary Bakos, a long time resident of Palmerton who now resides at The Village at Palmerton, celebrated her 94th birthday recently. She was born on Oct. 22, 1918.

She was one of six sisters who were very close knit. Their father passed away at the young age of 42, so the girls helped their mother with everything at home.

Mary remembers when her sister Goldie worked for Mrs. Haslum, an art teacher in Palmerton. Goldie arranged for Mary and their sister Erma to take lessons in painting with Mrs. Haslum. This would prove to be the sisters' bond.

Lois Holman

Lois Evelyn (Sands) Holman, a resident of Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, is celebrating her 99th birthday. She was born in Hazleton on Nov. 1, 1913.

Lois was married to Allan Williams for 47 years, until his death in 1979. She was married to David Holman for 10 years, until his passing in 2000.

She is a member of the Hazleton Chapter of the American Red Cross and received recognition for more than 50 years of service.

La Rue Smith

La Rue Smith, a resident of The Village at Palmerton, recently celebrated her 98th birthday. She was born on Oct. 17, 1914.

The daughter of Frank and Rista Strohl, she was born in Aquashicola on her parents' farm, like everyone else at that time. Her mom and dad instilled in her the appreciation of a hard day's work. They had a "truck patch" garden and grew all their own foods.

They raised chickens and pigs and even had a cow for milking. LaRue says that she had to take turns with her sister Pauline milking the cow twice a day.

STACEY SOLT/SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS Anna Ogozalek, who turned 101 on Oct. 26, celebrated her milestone birthday with family members on Friday. Helping her to celebrate were the nurses at Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, including Tonya Schaffer, CNA, left, and Stacy Engle, LPN.

Anna Ogozalek, formerly of Lansford, celebrated her 101st birthday on Friday. She is currently a guest at the Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Anna was born Oct. 26, 1911 to the late Joseph and Mary (Kocon) Porambo. She is the oldest of eight children.

She was married to the late Joseph Ogozalek and has three children: son Len Ogozalek, daughter Virginia Clemmer Zabo, and the late Joseph "Buddy" Ogozalek. She also has seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and 27 nieces and nephews.

Nevin Smith

Nevin Smith, a resident of The Village at Palmerton, celebrated his 91st birthday recently. He was born on Oct. 9, 1921.

Nevin, a retired World War II veteran, was drafted into the U.S. Army a week shy of his 21st birthday. He served in the 151st Infantry, Company G, as a rifleman from 1942-45. He was wounded twice in the line of duty and was discharged with a Purple Heart.

After the war he gained employment at Atlas Cement Company in Northampton, where he worked for 30 years prior to retirement.

Carl Hafer

Carl Hafer of Tamaqua, recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Born on Sept. 21, 1922, he was the son of the late Raymond and Esther Hafer of Lewistown Valley.

Carl and his wife Jean recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary.

Carl served in the Navy during World War II. He retired from Western Electric, Allentown after 39 years.

The Hafers have four children: Ester Jean, Carl (who is deceased), Ted and Greg. They have 10 grandchildren (two of whom are deceased), and 11 great-grandchildren.

Edith Smith

Edith Smith of Jim Thorpe recently celebrated her 90th birthday. The former Edith Heckman, she was born on Sept. 14, 1922.

She was married to the late Floyd Smith for 53 years.

Her birthday dinner celebration was attended by her children Cheryl (Smith) Popek of Lehighton and Randall Smith of Jim Thorpe as well as their spouses.

Also honoring their grandmother were Niccole (Popek) Burke, Rachel Popek, Katie Smith and Lee Smith, along with great-grandchildren Faith and Sawyer Chrisman and Maggie Burke. Also in attendance was Edith's best friend Lillian Popek.

Matilda "Tilly" Dreisbach

Matilda "Tilly" Dreisbach, a resident of The Village at Palmerton, celebrated her 96th birthday recently. She was born on Sept. 14, 1916 in Mahanoy City. She later moved to Slatington with her husband, Robert.

Tilly says that her greatest hobby was sewing because her mother was a dressmaker and taught her all the "tricks of the trade." Her favorite saying is, "The old gray mare ain't what she used to be," even though she has no gray hair at all.

Tilly enjoys listening to music especially when someone plays the organ on her floor at The Village at Palmerton.

Blaise Schweibinz

Blaise Schweibinz, a resident at the Village at Palmerton, celebrated his 86th birthday on Sept. 24.

He was born and raised in Lehighton but, if asked, he'll gladly tell you he found the best wife ever in Palmerton.

He and his late wife Evangeline raised two sons Terry and Larry.

Blaise served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Ranger. Afterward, he worked at Air Products as a machinist until retirement.

Later, to keep busy, he worked part-time for Rentschler Auto Parts.
