Rita Aniszewski

Rita (Neglia) Aniszewski, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community, Weatherly, recently celebrated her 90th birthday.

Born in Harlem, N.Y. on Aug. 1, 1923, she is the youngest sister of eight siblings. Rita was married to Anthony Aniszewski for 45 years until his death in 1993. During their life together they both enjoyed world and U.S. travel.

Rita has two daughters: Rose Cava, who resides in Jim Thorpe, and Rita who passed away in August of 1999.

Althea Young

Althea Young, a resident at the Village at Palmerton, celebrated her 93rd birthday on July 15.

Born in Bowmanstown, Althea was the youngest of three girls.

"Arletta, Florence and I were very close. When we were young, mom had each of us take piano lessons with Earl Seip on Delaware Avenue," says Althea.

"She felt it was important to always have music in our lives, she was right because later in high school I played piano in the orchestra while I attended Palmerton High School."

Dorothy Crown

Dorothy Crown, a resident at The Village at Palmerton, celebrated her 93rd birthday on July 15.

Born in Harrisburg, she is the only child of the late Claude and Maude Hassinger. She chuckles when she says that her parents said she was the perfect gift, so they stopped there.

Dorothy, "Dot" as she is better known, attended William Penn High School and later Central Pennsylvania Business College.

When she was about 21 years old, Dot and her friend Jean were at a local rollerskating rink and Harold was there with one of his friends.

Beatrice Burbes

Beatrice Burbes, a resident of the Hometown Nursing Home and formerly of Lehighton, is celebrating her 101st birthday. She was born on July 17, 1912.

She is the mother of two sons: Bruce Fritzinger of Lehighton, married to Charlotte; and Elmer Fritzinger, who passed away in 2001.

Beatrice is the wife of the late Lewis Burbes, who passed away in 1979.

A celebratory dinner is planned at the Beacon Diner in Hometown.

Betty (Oliver) Dolan

Betty (Oliver) Dolan of Tamaqua celebrated her 94th birthday on June 21. She graduated as valedictorian of her 1937 high school class from St. Jerome's.

She worked at the Atlas Powder Company during World War II. In the late 1960s she owned and operated the Corner Shop in Tamaqua.

She most recently was employed as assistant to the Tamaqua borough secretary.

She has two children: Susan of Tamaqua and Terry of Bethlehem, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Don Shea

Don Shea, a resident at The Village at Palmerton, celebrated his 86th birthday on June 17.

Born in Weissport, he was one of nine children. In 1941 his family moved to Allentown so his father could find work. After high school, he joined the Merchant Marines from 1945-47. He served in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin.

One evening at a USO dance, Don met Eleanor and he was smitten.

Doris Sturtevant

Doris Sturtevant, a resident of Heritage Hill Senior Community, celebrates her 99th birthday June 27. Born in Weatherly, she was the daughter of Harry and Mary (Rehrig) Wertman. She was married to Robert B. Sturtevant until his death in 1982. They have a son, Robert H. Sturtevant of Weatherly.

Doris graduated from Weatherly High School in 1931. Following graduation, she worked in the family business, Wertman's Hardware Store, with her father and brother, Bill.

Bertha Gersbach

Bertha Gersbach of Slatington celebrated her 90th birthday on June 15. She is the former Bertha Getz, daughter of the late Issac and Lauretta Getz of Union Hill. She is a twin sister to the late Beatrice (Getz) Long of Union Hill.

She was married to the late Willard Gersbach and has two sons, Willard "Bill" of California and Fred and his wife Diane of Slatington. She has two grandchildren, Eric Gersbach and his wife Gayle of Slatington, and Leah Gersbach of Conshohocken.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS Irene Zimmerman says she has lived a contented life in her 100 years.

Irene Zimmerman celebrated her 100th birthday on April 7. She says she has lived a contented life and attributes her long life to God.

"He has a plan for me. I read my Bible every day," she says.

Irene adds that she has followed a healthy lifestyle and has been lucky enough to have very little illness.

One of six children, Irene was born in Tharptown, Pa. She had five brothers. Her first job was in a dress factory until she married her husband, Roy Zimmerman in 1931. They lived in Shamokin and had four children.

Helene Bechtel

Helene (Klein) Bechtel was born on April 1, 1913 in the small town of Mauch Chunk. She has lived all 100 of her years in the town now known as Jim Thorpe; growing up on Center Street, just a few blocks from where she currently lives with her son, the Rev. James Bechtel.
