Nellie Johnson

Nellie (Greenwood) Johnson, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community, Weatherly, will celebrate her 97th birthday on April 24.

Born in Halifax, Yorkshire County, England, in 1917, Nellie has also resided in Cregah, Belfast (Northern Ireland) and Union, Newark, Irvington and Branchville, N.J.

Nellie was married to her loving husband, Horace, on April 27, 1946.

They both came to America on the Queen Mary in 1955 searching for those streets of gold. They were married for 49 years until his death in 1995.

Genevieve Skavery

Genevieve Skavery, a resident of Mt. Carmel Nursing Home, recently celebrated her 96th birthday. She was born on Jan. 26, 1918 to Stanley and Victoria Swatski of Mt. Carmel.

Genevieve and her husband Stanley, who worked as a coal miner, were married on June 17, 1939 at St. Stanislaus Church in Shenandoah.

Angeline Fudge

Angeline Fudge, McAdoo, and now a resident of Heritage Hill Senior Community is celebrating her 90th birthday.

Born Feb. 13, 1924, she is the daughter of the late Peter and Rose Tomaino.

She was married to the love of her life, Anthony Fudge until his death in 2007.

She has two children, Patricia who resides in Hazleton and Anthony Jr. who resides in McAdoo.

She has six grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

A birthday party will be held in her honor at Heritage Hill. Greetings can be mailed to her at 800 6th St. Weatherly, Pa. 18255.

LINDA KOEHLER/TIMES NEWS Gordon Chandler can't think of anything he likes better to do on his 100th birthday than to play cards.

His birth certificate may say that he turned 100 years old on Feb. 4, but Gordon Chandler says he still feels like a boy.

He attributes his longevity to "I just keep on moving," he says.

Chandler was born in Bethlehem. His family moved to Schnecksville and then Slatington, where he has lived most of his life.

Edgar Weiss of Palmerton, celebrated his 100th birthday on Jan. 14.

Weiss was born in Franklin Township to Herbert and Mary (Cellers) Weiss. He is the sole survivor of seven children.

Weiss is known for his sense of humor, which remains intact.

When he finished eighth grade, he says he thought he knew it all.

His first job was at the hosiery mill in Weissport. He worked five years in the steel mills, but most of his working years were in the hosiery mills until he retired.

He worked part-time for Rich Miller's funeral home in Union Hill until he was 85.

Joseph F. Shalanski

Joseph F. Shalanski, of Heritage Hill Senior Community, Weatherly, will soon celebrate his 98th birthday.

Formerly of Conyngham, he was born in Warrior Run on Feb. 1, 1916. One of five children in his family, he graduated from Warrior Run High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy.

He served as a seaman on an LST (Landing Ship, Tank) during World War II. He received a number of combat medals as the ship saw action in both the European and Pacific theaters.

He married Adele Kashulon on Feb. 23, 1946. They were married for 57 years, until her death in 2003.

Walter Woods

Walter Woods, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community, Weatherly, is celebrating his 93rd birthday. He was born on Jan. 17, 1921 in Patterson, N.J. He was the son of the late Walter Woods and Jean Johnson.

He graduated from Hawthorne High School in 1939 and enlisted in the Air Corps. He served as a pilot during World War II and received a number of combat medals including: American Theater Medal, Air Medal with three Oak Clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

LISA PRICE/TIMES NEWS Jayne Myers of Tamaqua is celebrating a century of living.

When Jayne Myers was born on Jan. 8, 1914, Woodrow Wilson was president, Babe Ruth had played his first game for the Red Sox, and Charlie Chaplin had starred in his first film, "Making a Living."

A century later, Meyers' eyes are a steady and impish blue. She's wearing blue jeans and boots, and a stylish green jacket.

Tamaqua Adult Day Care Center facility director Darlene Smith and program assistant Ginny Woodward ready her for a picture with her birthday cake, but she laughs as they smooth her hair.

Margaret Fay

Margaret (Puglio) Fay, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community, will celebrate her 94th birthday on Nov. 21.

She was born in Hazleton, graduated from Hazleton High School and received a diploma as an RN from the Hazleton General Hospital School of Nursing. After graduating from nurses training, she and two other friends enlisted in the Army, serving a tour in Europe during World War II. During her time in the Army she traveled extensively throughout Europe.

Helen Rhoades

Helen (Reimiller) Rhoades, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community, Weatherly, is celebrating her 94th birthday.

Born in Hazleton on Nov. 16, 1919, she is the daughter of the late Clora and Charles Reimiller.

On Nov. 5, 1938, Helen wed Charles Rhoades, who died in 2004. They parented three children: Clo-Ellen Rhoades Triano of Richmond, Va., Charles Oscar Rhoades (deceased) and George Byron Rhoades of Weatherly.

Helen is the proud grandmother to seven: twins Scott and Shawn Rhoades, David Triano, Steven Triano, Michele Rhoades, Travis Rhoades and Caitlin Rhoades.
