Ardie Helmer

Ardie Helmer, a resident of The Village in Palmerton, celebrated his 96th birthday recently. He was born on Nov. 10, 1915. A family party was held to mark this special occasion.

Ardie has three children, Linda, wife of David Bergey of Ambler, Pa.; Bill, husband of Barbara Helmer of Phillipsburg, N.J.; and David, husband of Carol Helmer of Lehighton.

He also has three grandchildren, Chad, husband of Jennifer Helmer of Allentown; Mark Bergey of Ohio; and Susan Bergey of New Jersey. Ardie also has a great-grandson, Sean Helmer.

Lois E. (Sands) Holman

Lois Evelyn (Sands) Holman, of Heritage Hill Senior Community, Weatherly, is celebrating her 98th birthday Nov. 1. Born in Hazleton in 1913, she was married to Allan Williams for 47 years until his passing in 1979, and to David Holman Sr. for 10 years until his death in 2000.

Lois is a member of the Hazleton Chapter of the American Red Cross and received recognition for over 50 years of service. She was instrumental in starting the Red Cross Bloodmobile in Weatherly and was also a volunteer in the Hazleton Red Cross office during World War II.

Helen Cheslock

Helen (Zankofski) Cheslock, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, will be celebrating her 93rd birthday on Saturday.

Born in Hazleton in Oct. 29, 1918, Helen was married to her husband Richard for 35 years, until his passing in 1976.

Helen and her husband had two children: Richard Cheslock, who resides in Virginia, and Francella Hamecs, who resides in New Jersey.

Helen has three grandchildren, Lynn, Bryan, and Daniel; and two great-grandsons, Eric and George.

Mrs. Anna Mary Ogozalek is celebrating her 100th birthday this week. Helping her to observe the day are her son Leonard and daughter, Virginia Zabo.

Family and friends of Anna Mary Ogozalek, a resident of Summit Hill who is a guest at the Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Mahoning Township, gathered on Sunday, Oct. 23, to celebrate her 100th birthday which will be held on Wednesday of this week.

Close to 50 persons were on hand for the special celebration, during which time the honoree received proclamations from state Rep. Doyle Heffley and William J. O'Gurek, chairman of the Carbon County Board of Commissioners.

Mamie Strohl

On Sunday, Mahoning Valley Nursing Home resident Mamie Strohl celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends.

Strohl was born Sept. 25, 1911 in what used to be known as Hatchery, Pa.

"It's under water now," said Strohl.

She also attended school there in a one-room schoolhouse.

She is the daughter of the late James and Emma (Dotter) Meinhart and wife of the late Clayton Strohl.

Melba Schafer Harleman

Melba Schafer Harleman, a resident of Slate Belt Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Bangor, celebrated her 90th birthday on Aug. 27.

Melba lived in North Weissport and Lehighton before moving to the Effort/Brodheadsville area in 1954.

She has two daughters, Sandra Altemose and her husband Bill of Effort; and Brenda Dorshimer and her husband Bob of Kunkletown; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Anastasia Hinkle

Anastasia Hinkle, Palmerton, recently celebrated her 85th birthday. Born July 17, 1926, she was one of eight children born in Palmerton to John and Kathryn Hishta.

She grew up on Princeton Ave-West, and in the 1930s her family built a home on the newly constructed 100 block of Franklin Avenue. She graduated from Palmerton High School in 1944 and organized over 50 years of reunions for the class, including the last "hurrah" reunion she is currentlyplanning.

Anastasia was married to Abner Hinkle in 1952 and had two sons.

Agnes Josephine Kopec

Agnes Josephine Kopec, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community, recently celebrated her 92nd birthday.

She was born on July 18, 1919 in Harwood, Pa. Agnes also resided in Treskow, Hazleton, West Hazleton and Weatherly. She was married to Peter Kopec in 1944 and they were married for 33 years until his passing in 1977.

Agnes worked as an examiner in Perfect Maid and Tony & Carmella's dress factories. She is a member of the ILGWU and Transfiguration church in West Hazleton.

June Heiney, a resident at the Village in Palmerton, observed her 86th birthday on June 24.

The daughter of the late Olive and Victor Behler, she was born in Tamaqua, and attended elementary school there until her parents moved to Lower Towamensing in Palmerton. She then went to the Aquashicola school where she graduated as a 10th-grade student in 1941. She went on to complete her education and graduated from the Stephen S. Palmer High School in Palmerton in 1943.

June was employed as a sampler in the testing department of the New Jersey Zinc Co. laboratory.

Beatrice Burbes

Beatrice Burbes, a resident of Hometown Nursing Home and formerly of Lehighton will celebrate her 99th birthday on July 17.

She is the widow of Lewis Burbes, who passed away in 1979.

She is the mother of two sons: Bruce Fritzinger, who resides in Lehighton with his wife, Charlotte, and Elmer Fritzinger, who passed away 10 years ago.

A dinner is planned in her honor.
