Agnes Josephine Kopec

Agnes Josephine Kopec, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community, recently celebrated her 92nd birthday.

She was born on July 18, 1919 in Harwood, Pa. Agnes also resided in Treskow, Hazleton, West Hazleton and Weatherly. She was married to Peter Kopec in 1944 and they were married for 33 years until his passing in 1977.

Agnes worked as an examiner in Perfect Maid and Tony & Carmella's dress factories. She is a member of the ILGWU and Transfiguration church in West Hazleton.

June Heiney, a resident at the Village in Palmerton, observed her 86th birthday on June 24.

The daughter of the late Olive and Victor Behler, she was born in Tamaqua, and attended elementary school there until her parents moved to Lower Towamensing in Palmerton. She then went to the Aquashicola school where she graduated as a 10th-grade student in 1941. She went on to complete her education and graduated from the Stephen S. Palmer High School in Palmerton in 1943.

June was employed as a sampler in the testing department of the New Jersey Zinc Co. laboratory.

Beatrice Burbes

Beatrice Burbes, a resident of Hometown Nursing Home and formerly of Lehighton will celebrate her 99th birthday on July 17.

She is the widow of Lewis Burbes, who passed away in 1979.

She is the mother of two sons: Bruce Fritzinger, who resides in Lehighton with his wife, Charlotte, and Elmer Fritzinger, who passed away 10 years ago.

A dinner is planned in her honor.

Niles Landers Grover

Niles Landers Grover, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, celebrated his 90th birthday on Monday.

He was born on June 27, 1921 in Hudsondale. He has lived all of his life in this area.

Niles graduated in 1938 from Weatherly Area High School and was also a graduate of Hardwick University in New York.

During his service in World War II, as an Army Aircorp B-24 Bomber pilot, he received a Flying Distinguished Cross and various other medals of honor.

Bill Tiley

William "Bill" F. Tiley, formerly of Tamaqua, is celebrating his 100th birthday today at his home on Marco Island, Fla. His relatives and friends will gather to celebrate the occasion.

Born June 28, 1911, Tiley attended Tamaqua schools and participated on sports teams with Karl and Don Rubin and Joe Zanin. They all went to Temple University and played football under the coaching of the famous Glenn "Pop" Warner. He played on the winning team of the very first Sugar Bowl game that was played that year.

John E. Stanko Sr.

John E. Stanko Sr. of Lansford will celebrate his 90th birthday on June 7.

He is the son of the late August and Pauline (Skrovanek) Stanko.

He has a sister Ann living in Allentown. A brother Joe and two sisters, Elizabeth and Margaret, are deceased.

John is married to the former Nora Mattras. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in November.

Glen Laudenslager

Glen Laudenslager, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, celebrated his 92nd birthday on Sunday.

Born May, 15, 1919 in Lewistown, Glen also lived in Cape May and Colonia, N.J., and Port Charlotte, Fla. He is a World War II veteran and served in the Army Air Force as a radar mechanic in the B24 Squadron in Italy.

Glen married Rosetta Leona on Dec. 22, 1940. They were married for 50 years until her passing.

After 41 years, Glen retired from the Burnham, Pa. Steel Mill where he worked in the test preparation center.

Mary Kocher, a well-known local artist, recently celebrated her 90th birthday at a surprise party, given by her friends in the Carbon County Art League, and held at the home of Bill and Penny Allison.

The celebration was a first for Kocher.

"I couldn't believe it. It's the first party I've had in my 90 years," Kocher said. "We were matter of fact about such matters. We didn't have birthday parties. We were just busy with our lives."

Kocher grew up in Morgantown, W.V. As a child, she was immersed in art, as it was an interest of her parents and siblings.

@$:Joseph DeMaria turned 100 years old on Wednesday, March 23.

Joseph DeMaria of Hometown, formerly of Hazleton, celebrated his 100th birthday yesterday. He was born on March 23, 1911 in Kelayres.

A current resident of the Hometown Nursing Center, DeMaria also previously resided in Still Creek with his daughter, Judy, and her husband, Wayne Postupack.

He is a son of the late Ignazio and Domenica (Cerami) DeMaria.

The youngest of the seven DeMaria siblings (four brothers and three sisters), he is the last immediate member of the family.

In addition to his daughter Judy, he had a stepdaughter, the late Gloria Olsen of Florida.

Adam LaRose celebrated his 100th birthday on March 11.

Adam LaRose turned 100 years old this month and has something in common with today's youngsters. The former Lehighton man has his own Wii video game system, which he received at the age of 98.

He likes to play Tiger Woods PGA Tour on the Wii with his friends at Calvary Fellowship Homes Retirement Community in Lancaster. Sometimes he has a good game, but would prefer to play regular golf.

In addition to golf, LaRose enjoys Wii bowling, baseball and strength-fitness games. He also likes to read historical fiction.
