Glen Laudenslager

Glen Laudenslager, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, celebrated his 92nd birthday on Sunday.

Born May, 15, 1919 in Lewistown, Glen also lived in Cape May and Colonia, N.J., and Port Charlotte, Fla. He is a World War II veteran and served in the Army Air Force as a radar mechanic in the B24 Squadron in Italy.

Glen married Rosetta Leona on Dec. 22, 1940. They were married for 50 years until her passing.

After 41 years, Glen retired from the Burnham, Pa. Steel Mill where he worked in the test preparation center.

Mary Kocher, a well-known local artist, recently celebrated her 90th birthday at a surprise party, given by her friends in the Carbon County Art League, and held at the home of Bill and Penny Allison.

The celebration was a first for Kocher.

"I couldn't believe it. It's the first party I've had in my 90 years," Kocher said. "We were matter of fact about such matters. We didn't have birthday parties. We were just busy with our lives."

Kocher grew up in Morgantown, W.V. As a child, she was immersed in art, as it was an interest of her parents and siblings.

@$:Joseph DeMaria turned 100 years old on Wednesday, March 23.

Joseph DeMaria of Hometown, formerly of Hazleton, celebrated his 100th birthday yesterday. He was born on March 23, 1911 in Kelayres.

A current resident of the Hometown Nursing Center, DeMaria also previously resided in Still Creek with his daughter, Judy, and her husband, Wayne Postupack.

He is a son of the late Ignazio and Domenica (Cerami) DeMaria.

The youngest of the seven DeMaria siblings (four brothers and three sisters), he is the last immediate member of the family.

In addition to his daughter Judy, he had a stepdaughter, the late Gloria Olsen of Florida.

Adam LaRose celebrated his 100th birthday on March 11.

Adam LaRose turned 100 years old this month and has something in common with today's youngsters. The former Lehighton man has his own Wii video game system, which he received at the age of 98.

He likes to play Tiger Woods PGA Tour on the Wii with his friends at Calvary Fellowship Homes Retirement Community in Lancaster. Sometimes he has a good game, but would prefer to play regular golf.

In addition to golf, LaRose enjoys Wii bowling, baseball and strength-fitness games. He also likes to read historical fiction.

Dorothy Schaar

Dorothy Sarah (Jacquot) Schaar, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, is celebrating her 94th birthday on March 8.

Born in Cementon, Pa. in 1917, Dorothy, lovingly known as Mrs. Schaar, has also resided in Audenried, Pa., St. Petersburg, Fla., and Freeland, Pa.

She worked in Woolworths and for United Charities.

She was married to her husband, Robert, on July 27, 1937 and remained married for 42 years until his passing.

She is the proud mother of two children, Barbara Schaar of Hazleton and Robert Schaar of Benton.

Mary Ann Bazules

Mary Ann (Gatz) Bazules, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, celebrated her 91st birthday on Saturday. She was born Feb. 12 in Old Forge in 1920. She also resided in Centereach, Long Island and Brodheadsville.

Mary worked for American Airlines at LaGuardia Airport. She was married to her husband, Paul, for 50 years until his passing. Mary has two sons, George of Brodheadsville and Paul of North Carolina. She is the proud grandmother of Paula and great-grandmother of James and Thomas.

Jean Towle

Jean Towle, a resident of Hometown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, was the guest of honor at a 90th birthday party held Sunday afternoon in the center's activities room.

Towle was born Feb. 6, 1921, and worked at the Pottsville Journal prior to her marriage.

She is well known for her community involvement in the Tamaqua area and, in particular, her loyal support of the U.S. Armed Services and veterans' groups.

She is the daughter of the late Gus and Lenora Knies and widow of Royal C. Towle Sr.

Stephanie Ann Palko

Stephanie Ann Palko, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, is celebrating her 93rd birthday on Jan. 17.

Born in 1918 in Plainfield, N.J., Stephanie also resided in Perth Amboy and Edison, N.J. Stephanie was married to her loving husband, Michael "Mickey" Palko for 30 years until his passing. She is the proud mother of three children, Barbara Davis of New Jersey and Stuart, Fla.; George Sawicki of Jim Thorpe; and Michael Palko of Florida. She is also the proud grandmother of five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

William Valinch

William Valinch, formerly of 407 Rolling Mill Ave., Tamaqua, will celebrate his 102 birthday on Dec. 22.

Currently residing in Sacramento, Calif., Bill was born in Gilberton, the son of the late John and Margaret (Zerdgusky) Valinch.

He was married to the former Julia McGee for 70 years and has two sons, William of North Huntington and John of Carmichael, Calif. A long time Notre Dame fan, he continues to enjoy regular trips to the casino.

Blanche Esther (Brooks) Garrett

Blanche Esther (Brooks) Garrett, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly celebrated her 90th birthday on Nov. 26.

Born in Nesquehoning in 1920, Blanche also resided in Lansford, Jim Thorpe, Lake Harmony and New Jersey.

A graduate of Summit Hill High School, Blanche worked in the Windsor Department Store in Lehighton and Brights Department Store, and she managed the coffee and Italian shop at Split Rock Lodge.

She was married to Russell Warran Garrett for 14 years until his passing in 1996.
