Norwood Anewalt

Norwood Anewalt of Palmerton recently celebrated his 88th birthday, surrounded by his family.

He was born on May 26, 1924, the son of the late Clayton and Mamie Anewalt of Palmerton.

He was married to Ethel (Heisler) Anewalt for 62 years, until her passing.

Norwood is a proud World War II veteran, who traveled the world on the troop carrier, The West Point.

He fought with the Fifth Marine Division and was wounded on Iwo Jima, for which he received the Purple Heart.

Alice Yanulevich

Alice Yanulevich, a resident of Heritage Hill Senior Community, Weatherly, formerly of Seybert Street in Hazleton, is celebrating her 90th birthday today. She is the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Bohenek, and is one of 12 children.

She was married for 54 years to the late Stanley Yanulevich, who passed away in 2005. She is the mother of three children: the late Jeanette Malisko, Susan Shane and Stanley Yanulevich Jr. She has eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Francy Lawton

Francy Lawton of Carriere, Miss. and formerly of Summit Hill, celebrated his 90th birthday recently. He was born on May 26, 1922 in Summit Hill.

The son of John and Margaret Lawton, he is married to Helen Haluska for 68 years.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Summit Hill, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He still flies the Marine flag in front of his home.

He is the father of two children, Lois, who is deceased, and Frances, wife of Robert McElmoyle of Carriere, Miss.

Daniel T. Novitsky

Daniel T. Novitsky, a resident of Heritage Hill in Weatherly, recently celebrated his 90th birthday.

He was born on March 23, 1922 in Hazleton. He graduated from Hazleton High School in 1938.

During World War II Dan was in the U.S. Army 30th Infantry Division, where he calculated artillery targets for 105 mm howitzers.

He was part of the Omaha Beach invasion, and fought through France and Belgium. As honor for his service, he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Dan was married for 61 years to Anna (Brazzo) Novitsky, until her death in 2007.

Ailene Abbie Meyers Utz

Ailene Abbie Meyers Utz will soon be celebrating her 95th birthday. She was born on Feb. 17, 1917 to Maud Jordon and John Kemp Meyers of Dayton, Ohio.

She met her husband David William Utz while they were students at Ohio Wesleyan University. They were married for more than 50 years until his passing. Over the years they lived in Dayton; Albany, N.Y.; Chicago; and Savannah, Ga.

Abbie moved to Heritage Hill from Savannah in September after the passing of her companion of more than 10 years, Tom Carr.

William Valinch

William Valinch, currently residing in Sacramento Calif., recently celebrated his 103rd birthday.

Formerly of Rolling Mill Avenue in Tamaqua, "Bill" was born in Gilberton, Pa. on Dec. 22, 1908, to the late John and Margaret (Zerdgusky) Valinch. He was married to the former Julia McGee for 70 years.

He has two sons: William of North Huntington, Pa. and John of Carmichael, Calif. He also has two granddaughters and three great-granddaughters.

Ruth Huhn

Ruth Huhn, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community in Weatherly, is celebrating her 100th birthday on Dec. 25.

Born in Brooklyn, Indiana in 1911, Ruth has also resided in Palmerton, Connecticut and Weatherly. She was a secretary at Tung-Sol in Weatherly for 30 years.

Ruth was married to Fred Huhn in 1935 and they were married for 48 years. Over the years Ruth has belonged to the Salem Choir, Gray Ladies, and the Women's Guild.

She is a member of Salem UCC in Weatherly. Ruth is also an avid fan of Penn State football.

Gabe P. Ferrence

Gabe Peter Ferrence, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community, Weatherly, celebrated his 96th birthday on Dec. 20.

Born on a farm in White Bear, Summit Hill in 1915, Gabe graduated from Nesquehoning High School in 1934. He married his wife, Rose, in 1938 and was married for 22 years until her passing in January of 1960.

He has three children, Ronald, Lansford; Jean Staloski, Lake Hauto; and Thomas, Nesquehoning. He also has four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He is the last surviving member of 10 children.

Blanche Garrett

Blanche Esther (Brooks) Garrett, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community, Weatherly, will celebrate her 91st birthday on Nov. 26.

Born in Nesquehoning in 1920, Blanche has also resided in Jim Thorpe; Lansford; Lake Harmony; Stratford, N.J.; and Summit Hill.

After graduating from Summit Hill High School in 1938, Blanche attended tech school in Jim Thorpe and trained to be a hair dresser.

She was married to Edward M. Jones for 40 years prior to his death in 1977, and to Russell Warren Garrett for two years prior to his death in 1998.
