Indians storm past Marian

It wasn't Harvey or Irma, but it was an epic storm nonetheless.

Lehighton's offense left plenty of damage in its wake as it pounded Marian with wave after wave of big plays. The Indians' storm also featured plenty of thunder and lightning - namely TaQuan Bradley-Chambers and Cody Scherer. The pair led the way as Lehighton rolled to a 44-0 victory over Marian on Friday.Bradley-Chambers provided the thunder with powerful runs. Playing only in the first half, he carried the ball 14 times for 177 yards and three touchdowns. Scherer produced the lightning, completing his first six passes for 176 yards and a score."Dangerous. That's how I would describe our backfield," said Lehighton coach Tom McCarroll. "A lot of teams in our league have a game-breaker, but I don't know if anyone has two game-breakers as talented as the ones we have."TaQuan and Cody both showed tonight how dangerous they are every time they touch the football. It's a really nice luxury to have as a coach."Lehighton wasted little time in displaying its 1-2 punch as Scherer went up top to hit Collin Troxell with a 44-yard pass on the game's first play. Two Bradley-Chambers runs then combined for 31 yards and a touchdown. The drive covered 75 yards and took just 46 seconds."We like to start games and series with big plays," said McCarroll. "I feel like it really helps create a good tempo and gets us going."Tonight, we did a nice job of that and then we were able to build on the momentum those big plays gave us."The Indians started each of their next two possessions with big pass plays and both drives produced touchdowns.A 32-yard Scherer to Nate Petit-Clair pass started the second possession that Bradley-Chambers capped with a 39-yard TD run. The next time the Indians got the ball, Scherer and Troxell hooked up for a 44-yard pass play on first down. Five plays later, it was a Scherer to Petit-Clair pass that produced a 24-yard touchdown and a 23-0 lead."We liked some of the matchups we had with our receivers," said Scherer. "We thought we could get the ball down the field and that's what we did. Our line gave me great protection and our receivers did a great job of getting open."Plus, TaQuan had another huge game running the football. I'm really proud of how the offense executed - and it wasn't just the starters, the twos and threes did a great job when they got in as well."Lehighton added a pair of second quarter TDs to increase the lead to 37-0. The Indian scores came on a 21-yard touchdown run by Chambers and a one-yard run by Scherer. The Indians' first-half storm of points not only produced plenty of damage, but put the mercy rule in play for the entire second half."Lehighton is a fantastic team," said Marian coach Pat Morgans. "Scherer and Bradley-Chambers are great players and they are extremely well coached."But we need to be better. We have to coach better, block better and tackle better. No excuses. We need to start playing better."BIG PLAY INDIANS ... Lehighton ran 30 plays from scrimmage in the first half and 12 of them went for gains of 14-or-more yards. In the first quarter alone, Scherer went 5-for-5 for 161 yards (32.2 yards per attempt) and Chambers carried the ball nine times for 95 yards (10.6 yards per attempt).SCORING DROUGHT ... Marian has now been shut out three straight games. The Colts offense did show flashes - Lehighton defensive backs had to make diving, touchdown-saving tackles after two long first-half pass plays - but the flashes were few and far between. "Our pass game was a little better this week, but we need to be able to run the ball. We haven't had a running game in three weeks and that makes it really tough to do anything offensively."HE'S THE (WHITE) MAN ... The Indians' Chris Whiteman set up his team's fourth touchdown with an interception and 28-yard return in the second quarter. Chambers scored on the first play following the game's only turnover.STILL PERFECT ... Lehighton improves to 4-0 on the season while Marian falls to 1-3.

Lehighton's Chris Whiteman tries to pull away from Marian's Robert Sunder during last night's game. Running downfield on the play are the Colts' Dalton Rupert (31) and the Indians' Kyle Strohl. BOB FORD/TIMES NEWS
