Principal controversy continues

Palmerton Area High School principal Paula Husar was escorted from her office Thursday.

“At the conclusion of the school day today Mrs. Husar did surrender her district keys to a team of administrators and was escorted from the high school complex,” board President Barry Scherer confirmed Thursday night.“No other information will be released as this is a personnel matter,” Scherer said.School Superintendent Scot Engler said the administration was in charge at the high school today.A due process hearing regarding a three-day suspension of Husar was held in private in front of only the school board July 27.According to multiple lawsuits filed by Husar against the district, the suspension was for an “alleged mishandling of a school bus incident.”While Husar wanted the hearing to be public, Palmerton Superintendent Scot Engler and school district lawyer John Audi objected based on privacy concerns for the student or students involved in the incident.Lawyers for both sides argued their case behind closed doors in front of an out-of-town hearing officer, Christopher Lantz of Wellsboro. In November 2016, Husar alleged negligence and breach of contract in a civil suit filed in the Carbon County Court of Common Pleas. Also in November 2016, Husar filed a gender discrimination, sexual harassment, hostile work environment, age discrimination and retaliation claim against the district and Engler before the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. On April 28, 2017, Husar filed a federal lawsuit in U.S. Middle District Court claiming retaliation by Engler and the district. In the complaint, Husar said she received a three-day suspension for “alleged improper handling of a school bus investigation” on April 19, one day after oral arguments in the Carbon County Court case.Husar’s attorneys claim she continues to suffer emotional distress, anxiety, mental stress, embarrassment, humiliation, loss of income and other financial losses. The district, through its lawyer Robin Snyder, denied claims of retaliation against Husar.
