Palmerton finishes property demolition

The Palmerton Borough Council reported at Thursday’s meeting that the demolition of a blighted property on Hillside Avenue was completed.

The demolition of the house, which was largely funded by a CDBG grant, was handled by contractor Jeff George.Borough Manager Rodger Danielson said that around $1,000 needs to be paid for the demolition.Danielson said that the county is looking into additional grants to cover the cost, though the borough may end up footing the bill.“The borough may have to pay that amount, but it’s still a small price to get that blighted property cleaned up,” Danielson said.Danielson also said that the property may be put up for sale in the near future.Other newsKeith Weaver was approved as a volunteer firefighter at the Palmerton Municipal Fire Company.The retirement of public works and street department employee Frank Hofacker was approved, effective June 14. The council approved the posting of an open position as well.Council member Holly Sell offered thanks to the borough workers who were indispensable during the cleanup following Stella.“I’d like to thank the borough workers for all they did. That was a lot of snow to remove, and they did a very good job removing it,” Sell said.Sell also said that she was surprised by the unpleasant interactions the workers faced while clearing snow, and reminded community residents to respect their efforts.“I ask that our borough residents be kind to them. They’re away from their families, they work long hours, and they’re doing the best they can,” she said.Sell also extended gratitude to the borough office staff who helped to set up a Facebook page for communication, including notification of ordinances and other important matters.
