Storm aftermath

Winter Storm Stella has made it tough on local school districts to get students back in the classroom.

With some areas getting over 2 feet of snow, Tuesday and Wednesday were wiped out for every district in the region.Around 3 p.m. Wednesday, closings already started rolling in for Thursday including Palmerton, Tamaqua, Jim Thorpe and Lehighton.“Our grounds guys have an incredibly difficult time getting everything cleared out,” Palmerton Superintendent Scot Engler said. “That has been the case across the board for almost all Carbon County school districts. Bus stops aren’t clear and many of the roads quite frankly aren’t great right now.”Temperatures expected to remain below freezing also played into decisions regarding classes on Thursday.“This is definitely the largest storm we’ve seen in a while,” said Jim Thorpe Superintendent Brian Gasper.“As with the other districts, we are seeing most roadways in our district that are snow covered, extremely narrow and subject to drifting. Most of our bus stops are not clear as well.”Further north, Dunmore Area School District and Lakeland Area School District announced Wednesday that they would be closed through the rest of the week.“We’re hopeful we can get back in Friday,” Engler said. “It’s a day-to-day decision for us right now.”The outlook in Jim Thorpe is also cautiously optimistic.“Of course, we would love to be in session on Friday, but time will tell,” Gasper said of Jim Thorpe’s schedule. “I am optimistic, but also know that there is a high likelihood that our schedule will be affected on Friday.”Palmerton has two makeup days scheduled, the Thursday before Easter and the Monday after Easter. Two additional days will be added to the end of the school calendar. That means Palmerton, delayed by a teachers’ strike, will finish on June 21.Lehighton, meanwhile, will keep its full complement of Easter/spring break vacation days.“We are adding the days, at this point, to the end of the school year,” Superintendent Jonathan Cleaver said. “Many of our students and staff have already planned family vacations around the spring break and I don’t want to change days this late in the year and have a negative impact on their schedules.”

Snow is piled up at a bus stop at the corners of Sixth and Center streets in Jim Thorpe. Most local roads have snow banks as a result of winter storm Stella. BOB FORD/TIMES NEWS
