Harry Hontz, Coaldale councilman, dies

A Coaldale councilman has died.

Harry Robert Hontz, Jr., 58, of East Ridge Street, Coaldale, died on Friday, in Coaldale.

Born in the Bronx, New York on Nov. 12, 1958, he was the son of the late Harry Sr. and Theresa (nee Bilotta) Hontz.

A 1976 graduate of Panther Valley High School, Harry was an EMT for both the Tamaqua Ambulance Association and the Penn Mahoning Ambulance Association. He had previously worked as an EMT at St. Luke's Hospital, Coaldale and in Tennessee as an AT&T call center manager. Harry was a member of the Coaldale Fire Co. and a member of the Coaldale Borough Council on which he served as the President of the Police Committee.

He was also a member of the East End Fire Co., Tamaqua, a social member of the Tamaqua Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #13, and a former member of the Coaldale and Lansford Ambulance Associations. Hontz had his own photography business, was an avid Penn State fan, and made a habit of putting everyone else's needs before his own. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Coaldale.

Surviving are his daughter, Ashley Hontz of Summit Hill; son, Joshua Hontz of Lansford; granddaughters Adalyn Hontz and Ivy Carl of Summit Hill; sisters, Joanne Lowmaster of Coaldale and Fran Foster and her husband Steve of Lansford; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 18 at the Zizelmann-Gulla Funeral Home, 500 East Broad Street, Tamaqua, with the Rev. Wayne Benack officiating.

Interment with military honors in Sky View Memorial Park, Tamaqua will follow the service. Call at the funeral home 5-8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday 9-10 a.m.
