Meixsell Valley speed limit considered

Eldred Township's board of supervisors has decided to look into speed limits for a potentially dangerous stretch of road.

Meixsell Valley Road, which currently has no listed speed limit, has seen several crashes over the years due to winding roads with steep inclines and declines."They're driving within the speed limit, but the speed limit is 55. But the word on the street is it's really 65, because troopers won't stop you unless you're going significantly over that," Chairwoman Mary Anne Clausen said.Clausen said that the board has been contacted numerous times with concerns such as the school bus stops along the route, along with residential driveways."There were a lot of people who wrote in and said they can't get out of their driveways safely," Clausen said. "They look back and forth, back and forth, but the sight line is limited, and with the speed limit at 55, you just have to say a small prayer and go."Roadmaster Keith Kuehner will be tasked with conducting a study on the roads, with some assistance provided by the Local Technical Assistance Program, which provided training for the studies. The study will focus on finding the most appropriate speed limit, considering the road conditions.Keuhner has already looked into signage for the roads, which he said could come as low as $784 total for the necessary signs."We would need approximately 10 signs for Meixsell Valley," Kuehner said before providing a warning. "You can put all the signs you want, but that may not deter them."Clausen said that the speeding problem has been around for quite some time, and has been presented to other Eldred supervisors over the years, but nothing has come of it."I think this board is a little more interested. There's probably more traffic, some things have changed," she said."Somebody said to me the other day that he tried, just for kicks, to see if he could drive it safely at 55," Clausen said. "He couldn't."In other businessA burn ordinance has been referred to solicitor Michael Gaul for review. According to the supervisors, this is the fourth draft of the ordinance that they have been working on for about 10 months. The ordinance largely focuses on the methods and regulations for burning items. Two requests for including six parcels of land into the Agricultural Security Area were submitted. Agricultural Security Areas are tracts of land that have been officially designated as agricultural districts by a local municipality. The Kunkletown Rod and Gun Club, which submitted requests for four parcels totaling approximately just over 11 acres, was deemed questionable. These parcels are located near old rails, with soil that does not meet the standards of the ASA. Franklin S. Smith, who submitted two requests totaling just under 36 acres, was suggested to be accepted.
