Veteran banner campaign underway

Two Nesquehoning organizations are partnering together to honor the veterans of the community.

The Nesquehoning UVO and Nesquehoning Historical Society are currently holding a Hometown Heroes Banner program, which will honor veterans both living and deceased and active duty military."The historical society has been interested in this project for a while and Lois (Kuba) ran into one of our auxiliary members and brought the idea to her," said Christa Kattner, Nesquehoning VFW Auxiliary president, adding that everyone loved the idea. "This partnership is perfect because Nesquehoning had a reputation back in World War II as one of the most patriotic towns in America, contributing more service people per capita to the war then other towns nationwide."The banners of the veterans and military personnel will be displayed on the utility poles along Catawissa Street in the borough, much like what you see in neighboring Tamaqua."The historical society and the UVO are natural partners to team up and showcase the long history of brave men and women from our town before and since World War II who have made such an important mark on our country," Kattner said. The cost for a banner, which measures 30 by 60 inches, is $225, and donations to cover the costs are now being accepted.Applications for veterans to be showcased are also now being accepted by the historical society and UVO at the VFW.The groups hope to have banners up in the town ahead of the Carbon County Veterans Day parade, which will be held in Nesquehoning on Nov. 5.A first deadline for banner applications is Aug. 31, and donations can be sent at any time. Applications for additional banners will also be accepted after Aug. 31, but applications accepted after the initial deadline may not be ready in time for Veterans Day.Banners will be displayed in the borough between May and November through 2020, Kattner said, noting that at that time, the purchaser of the banner will then be given the banner and have the option for renewal. For more information or to obtain an application, call historical society members Lois Kuba at 570-249-0364 or Grace Vandermartin at 570-669-9444 or the Nesquehoning VFW Post 8008 at 300 E.
