Horse show benefits Albrightsville fire company

Under sunny skies in Albrightsville, around 50 people turned out Sunday to show their horses in the 13th annual benefit event hosted by the Getz Farm.

"We've been doing the horse show for many years and today is an ideal day," said Gene Getz, of the Albrightsville Volunteer Fire Company. "It's not hot and it's not raining for a change. There are 37 classes. The event is really growing and it's great to see everyone out having a fun day."All proceeds from the event go to the fire company. The event began as a way for the fire company to generate money for a $10,000 down payment on a safety van.The show normally brings in between $3,000 to $5,000 per year."We have a lot of great businesses that sponsor the event," said Lorraine Boyles, horse show committee adviser. "The spectators like to come out and see the variety of horses. The miniature horses are always a big hit."Classes included English, Western, Gymkhana and more.High Point awards were given in the Junior Pleasure, Senior Pleasure, Jack Benny, Ranch Horse, Junior Gymkhana, Senior Gymkhana and Miniature Horse divisions.Andrew Kriebel and his horse "Lincoln" got off to a fast start, taking home top honors in the halter class, which is open to horses and ponies.Kriebel also finished first in the ranch horse halter competition, open to those horses suitable for ranch type work.Tricia Sullivan of Blanket of Stars Farm in Pottstown served as the judge Sunday. The committee, Boyles said, has worked hard over the years to expand the event. This year, it added a variety of contests for kids."We have coloring contests," Justine Blew said. "There is also a three-legged race, a bean bag toss, pin the tail on the horse and children can also design flower pots."The winning design may be used next year as the official art for the horse show.
