Tamaqua officer assaulted

A Tamaqua man faces multiple charges after injuring a Tamaqua police officer who was attempting to take him into custody on June 11.

Police received a tip at 7:07 p.m. that Phillip Michael Ryan, 28, of Hazle Street, who had a warrant for his arrest, was at the East End Park on Mountain Avenue. The officer responded and saw Ryan and two other men walking on Arlington Street. Ryan fled into the woods when he saw the patrol car.The officer followed him into the woods and saw Ryan throw a backpack into some shrubbery. The officer followed Ryan. As they ran through the woods, the officer yelled for Ryan to stop, telling him he would be tasered if he didn't.Ryan did stop, then turned toward the officer, taking an aggressive stance, before turning to run again. The officer used his Taser, which caused Ryan to stop.As the officer went to handcuff him, Ryan pulled away and a struggle began. During the struggle Ryan elbowed the officer in the face, cutting his lip and inner cheek. He was able to get away and ran toward Arlington Street, tossing trash cans and flower pots at the officer in pursuit.Back on the street a second officer joined in the chase and Ryan was eventually tackled and cuffed.Ryan was transported to St. Luke's Miner's Campus in Coaldale.The backpack was retrieved and searched. Officers found marijuana, suspected crystal meth, four pink and white capsules, a torch lighter, clothing, two zippered containers, red straws, a digital scale and $100 in cash.The officer was also treated at St. Luke's, receiving four stitches to close his face wound.Ryan was charged with aggravated and simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.He was arraigned before on-call District Judge Anthony Kilker, of Shenandoah, who set bail at $50,000 straight cash, earning Ryan a trip to the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville.
