Silfies, Rehrig lead Towamensing

Zach Silfies and Devyn Rehrig served as the Towamensing Joe's battery against the Panther Valley Black Diamonds on Wednesday.

It was fitting since the pair combined to power the Joe's to a 3-2 Keystone Senior Babe Ruth League victory."Our kids came to play today," Towamensing Joe's manager Brian Taschler said. "We knew it was Panther Valley. A great bunch of kids over there. A great coach as well. We knew it was going to be a hell of a game. So, we brought our best."We want to win every game. We come to win every game, especially against Panther Valley. We want to take momentum into the playoffs."Silfies provided a solid effort from the mound as he kept the Black Diamonds' bats in check. Meanwhile, Rehrig not only did a nice job orchestrating things from behind the plate, but he also led Towamensing offensively."It was a great team win," said Silfies, who allowed five hits and struck out four. "I had great plays behind me. I didn't have everything today. But, my teammates really picked me up today."Rehrig doubled in the second and then his courtesy runner Austin Kuehner eventually crossed home plate on a Monte Baez sacrifice fly, giving the Towamensing Joe's a 1-0 lead. The Black Diamonds' Zach Kindt knotted the game up at 1-1 in the fourth with a RBI double. In the fifth, Rehrig gave the Joe's the lead back with an RBI-single to right field, which scored Ian Silfies. And then Kuehner scored an insurance run on a Ben Serfass RBI single, making it 3-1 in the host's favor."It's a great feeling knowing I played a role in this important victory," Rehrig said. "It's just a great win."The Black Diamonds didn't go down without showing some fight, however. In the seventh, consecutive singles by Darren Goida, Teagan Schmidt and Zach Kindt pulled them to within a run. But, the Joe's defense stepped up to make some big plays and Silfies went on to strike out his last batter to end any thought of Black Diamond rally."We knew coming into today that we were going to see their best," Panther Valley Black Diamonds' manager Rich Evanko said. "I told the kids after Tuesday's game that we lost, 'Tomorrow is a new day. We have Towamensing - the defending champ. And, they're looking to win it again this year. They have a very good team and we need to come ready to play. We can't have a hangover from that loss yesterday.'"My players didn't quit. We had a chance in the seventh, but we just couldn't finish off the inning. We know we're going to see their best every time. And, we need to give them our best every time."PITCH COUNT … Towamensing's Silfies finished with a total of 92 pitches, 21 of them coming in the seventh inning. Three times in the game, Silfies needed less than 10 pitches to get out of an inning - as he threw just five pitches in the sixth iunning and eight in each the third and fifth innings. Panther Valley's starting pitcher Ryan Taras ended the game with 69 pitches in six innings of work.ONE OF A KIND(T) … Zach Kindt led the Black Diamonds with a single, double and two RBIs. He would have had a third hit, but the Joe's first baseman Jake Taschler gloved a bullet down the line.Panther Valley 000 100 1 - 2 5 2Towamensing 001 020 x - 3 5 1R. Taras and M. Goida, J.
