Towamensing captures title

EAST STROUDSBURG - One night after relying on its offense to lead the way, the Towamensing Joe's showed they can win with pitching and defense as well.

On Wednesday night, Towamensing finished off a sweep of the best-of-three Keystone Senior Babe Ruth championship series with a 5-2 victory over East Stroudsburg."There were tremendous plays all-around today," said Towamensing manager Brian Taschler. "Ben (Serfass) at shortstop, Jake (Taschler) at first, Sal (Melo) in right field, Cody (Wallace) in center ... they all made great plays."There's no pitcher on this team that's afraid to take the mound when you have eight guys behind you that will make plays."Towamensing Joe's starting pitcher Brody Boehler can attest to that.Boehler struck out just two batters in six strong innings on the mound, trusting his defense to make the plays behind him."As a pitcher when you can trust your defense, it's the greatest feeling in the world," said Boehler said. "All I did today was throw grounds balls and fly balls."My defense really helped me out today."After the Joe's gave Boehler some support with two runs in the second inning, he helped himself out by starting off another productive inning in the third.Singles by Boehler and Taschler put runners on the corners. A wild pitch scored Boehler before an RBI double by Melo made it 4-0.Leading 4-2, Towamensing pushed an insurance run across in the seventh. Ian Silfies was hit by a pitch, stole second, reached third on a wild pitch, and scored on Boehler's single.Zach Silfies relieved Boehler in the seventh and struck out the side to secure Towamensing's second consecutive league title."It doesn't matter where we win it. These kids will win it anywhere," said Brian Taschler. "They're gamers. I love every one of them."And, I can't wait to get on the field with them next year."TAKING THREE FOR THE TEAM … Not once, not twice, but three times Ian Silfies was hit by a pitch during the game.BRODY AT THE PLATE … Boehler not only got the pitching win, but also provided the spark on offense. Boehler was 3-for-4 with three singles, a run scored and an RBI. Taschler added two singles and a run scored.GOLDEN GLOVES … Wallace started the Joe's version of "Web Gems" when he slid on his knee to take away a base hit in the third inning. First baseman Taschler and shortstop Serfass hooked up on a double play. Melo turned a potential Mustang's single into a fielder's choice as he threw a bullet to second to get Christian Guzman out on a force at second base in the fifth inning.Towamensing 022 000 1 - 5 10 2E.
