Community helping fire victims

The community is rallying around a family who lost their 9-year-old daughter in a devastating fire Saturday morning.

Several fundraisers are already being conducted for the Gower family of Beaver Run Drive in Mahoning Township.Troy Gower suffered burns and remains in a medically-induced coma, according to family friend Tracy Mikolawski. His son was also injured and will hopefully be moved from intensive care today, Mikolawski.Mikolawski, who visited with Troy's wife Julie at the hospital Sunday, started a fundraiser to help the Gowers. At presstime, nearly $22,000 of the $40,000 goal had been raised.Mikolawski said, "No family should have to now worry about the expenses after such losses. To know this family is to love this family. They are great people and are in need of much help after this horrific tragedy. Any amount will help. God Bless!"The fire broke out at 1:30 a.m. Saturday and was extinguished by 4:30 a.m. Nine local departments were called to the scene.A state police fire marshal has been called to determine the cause of the blaze. The Gower's 9-year-old daughter, Vahnne, was found in the bedroom, according to state police at Lehighton. Coroner Robert Miller said she died of asphyxiation.Heather Fiorentino, another family friend, also listed the fundraiser on the New Carbon County Online Yard Sale on Facebook."They're neighbors of ours, and they're a great family that always helps everyone else. With the trauma of losing a loved one, along with everything they own, in the fire, it's tragic. People started asking where and what they could donate so the family didn't have to rebuild from scratch. I just wanted to help out any way that I could," Fiorentino said."So far, it's going very well. Everyone has been so helpful and considerate. Everyone has been reaching out to help."Donation boxes are set up at many area businesses. The American Red Cross is also helping the family."Anything really helps, since they lost everything. Every little thing you can think of in a house, everything counts," Fiorentino said."We've always had an amazing community. When a tragedy like this struck, everyone came out to help. Everyone has been wonderful," she added.Right now, donations of gift cards are most appreciated so that the family can get what they need, as storage is an issue.Gift cards and gas cards for hospital trips are appreciated."We wish them the best. We know it's a long road to recovery, but we're here for everything they need."Mikolawski said, "The Gower family (is) truly blessed to have such an enormous amount of love and support from their family and friends."Though no amount of money can mend a broken heart, it however helps to give the family maybe one less thing to have to worry about."I know Troy and Julie will be grateful. Please as you head to bed tonight no matter of your religious beliefs, keep this family in your prayers. And more importantly kiss your loved ones for tomorrow is never promised."Fundraisers currently happening for the Gower familyDONATION BOXES FOR GIFT, GAS CARDS:• Rumors Beauty Salon located on Bankway Street in Lehighton.• AT&T in Lehighton, 1020 Blakeslee Blvd Drive East, Lehighton.• Snyder Tires, 103 E.
