Carbon approves Hazmat training

Carbon County officials are making sure training is available to first responders who may deal with an incident regarding hazardous materials.

On Thursday, the commissioners approved a 2017 training membership program contract with Bucks County Community College. The contract opts for a bronze membership with an annual fee of $1,200.Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that this package gives the county a block of 200 hours of training and is paid for through the 2016-2017 Hazardous Materials Response Fund grant.Other businessThe commissioners also:• Accepted the resignation of Warren Burnard of Walnutport from the Local Emergency Planning Committee, effective Jan. 4.• Authorized the notice to proceed to Navarro & Wright Consulting Engineers Inc., of New Cumberland, for construction inspection services for the pedestrian bridge project in Jim Thorpe.• Adopted a proclamation recognizing Jan. 22 through 28 as School Choice Week in the county.• Approved the employment separations of Walter M. Hess of Weatherly and Brittany T. Stepp of Palmerton as part-time corrections officers, effective Jan. 18.• Accepted the resignations of Christopher J. Wickkiser of Nesquehoning, effective Jan. 7; Spencer P. Andrews of Kunkletown, Jan. 1; and Nathaniel W. Kotzmoyer of Tamaqua, Jan. 14. Wickkiser was a corrections officer while Andrews and Kotzmoyer were part-time corrections officers.• Approved the change of status for O'Neil O. Chambers of Albrightsville, from part-time corrections officer/Teamsters to corrections officer, effective Jan. 30.• Approved the change of status for Eladio I. Gonzalez of Allentown, from part-time corrections officer to part-time corrections officer/Teamsters, effective Jan. 30.
