NL downs Palmerton

Northern Lehigh has rarely entered a game this season with a size advantage.

So when they had one Friday night, the Bulldogs made the most of their opportunity.Led by frontcourt players Joe Egan and Gio Colon, Nolehi dominated the paint and cruised to a 53-36 Colonial League win over rival Palmerton."We knew coming in, we felt we could get the ball inside," said Bulldog head coach Jeff Miller. "Joe and Gio have worked real hard this year to get the looks inside. Unfortunately, we've been going most games against teams that are bigger than us. For a change, we faced a team that may have been a little smaller than us."I also thought a big key was our ball movement. We really moved the ball well tonight, probably the best that we've moved it all year."While the entire Northern Lehigh team was part of that ball movement, the Bulldogs (6-9; 4-7) especially thrived when the two big men were looking for each other."We had a good match-up, having a height advantage on them, so we just took advantage of it," said Egan, who finished with a game-high 26 points. "Whoever was getting doubled would look for the other guy. We just tried to get it to each other. We have good chemistry, so we just fed on that."Colon, who finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds, was the recipient early on as his five inside buckets helped the visitors gain a 22-14 lead.Egan took over after that, hitting five shots in the paint during the middle frames to extend the margin and keep his team comfortably ahead."They work really well together," said Miller. "Whether it was Joe getting the assist to Gio, or Gio getting the assist to Joe. They look for each other a lot and they were succesful."We were patient tonight, looking for the extra pass, making them work hard on defense, and then eventually taking advantage of it. We knew we had to stop (their leading scorer Nate) Dougherty because he can light it up. We gave Brandon Hess that assignment and he did a real nice job."Dougherty, like most of the Bombers (1-13; 1-10), suffered through a tough shooting night. The team was just 7-of-29 from the floor in the first half."I thought we had great looks in the first quarter, but they just didn't go in," said Palmerton mentor Ken Termini. "Then in the second quarter we started forcing some shots ... and with poor shots and turnovers, they got their running game going."HALL OF FAME NIGHT ... Prior to the varsity game, Palmerton inducted five individuals and one team into its Hall of Fame. Those honored were Art George, Tom Wargo, Debra (Rodrigues) Biro, Dave Lucykanish, Nicole Levandusky, and the 1980 boys basketball team.DOUBLE-DIGIT LEAD ... A driving shot by Hess with 20 seconds left until halftime gave the Bulldogs a 30-19 lead. Nolehi maintained the double-digit lead the entire second half.SHOOTING TOUCH ... Thanks to their inside game, Northern Lehigh finished 22-of-44 (50 percent) from the floor. The Bombers, meanwhile, ended 14-of-49 (28.6 percent).JV GAME ...
