Tamaqua OKs curriculum changes

Tamaqua Area School District has approved several curriculum changes at its high school.

On a 6-0 vote, with directors Thomas Rottet, Aaron Frantz, and Wanda Zuber absent, the school board on Tuesday agreed to change its high school graduation requirements.The changes include dropping computer applications from a full-year one-credit course to a semester 0.5-credit course, while adding your employability skills as a half-year 0.5-credit graduation requirement. Previously, students were required to have one credit of computer applications to graduate.Also on Tuesday, the board approved several 2021 graduation requirement changes.Starting with that year's class, students will be required to have 0.5 credits of computer applications and 0.5 credits of your employability skills to graduate, along with our other current graduation requirements.In other businessThe board also accepted or approved:• The resignation of middle school teacher Amanda Peel, at a date agreed upon with the superintendent.• The resignation of full-time paraprofessional Madlin Saoud, effective Jan. 11.• The resignation of part-time paraprofessional Heather Griffin, effective Jan. 9.• Rachel Lynn Christian as a professional substitute teacher.• Fran Kowalewski as a substitute health room nurse.• High school Assistant Principal Ray Lenhart as a substitute coordinator, effective Jan. 16.• Professional School Photography as the district's photographer for the 2017-18, 2018-19, and 2019-20 school years.• Granted the Ski Club permission to go to Smuggler's Notch, in Jeffersonville, Vermont, Feb. 24-26, with early dismissal Feb. 24.• A policy related to Promotion and Retention.• The 2015 Income Audit, placing the accounts presented as delinquent Assessed Occupation Tax to Berkheimer for collection.• The 2015 Tax Collector's Audit.
