Lehighton cruises past PV

Odds are in favor of the team with more opportunities.

During a Schuylkill League Division 1 clash between Lehighton and Panther Valley on Saturday, it was the Indians who created more chances than the Panthers. The Tribe accumulated 18 more field goal attempts than Panther Valley, which assisted in a 40-19 league victory. There’s a direct correlation between the shot differential of the two teams as Lehighton grabbed 14 offensive rebounds, which resulted in many more possessions. Skylynn Faust grabbed 11 rebounds with four coming on the offensive end.“In a testimony to Sky, sometimes when things aren’t happening, you have to find ways to help your team win,” said Lehighton head coach Eric Gidney. “When the shots aren’t falling, what can we do on the other side of the court? That’s one of the things that we wanted to focus on. We also created some turnovers and tried to make it a challenge for Panther Valley.”The shots weren’t falling for Panther Valley either. The Panthers shot just 6-for-48 from the floor and were outscored 9-0 by the Tribe in the second period.“Pitching that shutout in the second quarter was huge,” Gidney said. “We ran our half-court trap toward the latter half of the second quarter and I think that really changed things up. I think that it frustrated them. It created offense for us, but we didn’t capitalize.“Panther Valley eventually started to figure it out and got some nice baseline looks. So we went back to our man defense. We just try to figure out what is the best way to make our opponent uncomfortable.”For Lehighton, Aubrey Blasiak had a game-high 12 points, 10 in the first half.“I’m just happy to bounce back after a tough game with Tamaqua,” Gidney said. “Rebounding was sort of our Achilles heal on Thursday night. I don’t think Panther Valley had any fast break points, so we were able to crash everyone on the offensive end.“We’re still trying to find that groove. We just can’t seem to find it. To Panther Valley’s credit, they’re working hard and they haven’t given up. They battled and played physical.”BALANCE … Lehighton had numerous players contribute during the win. Eight of the 10 Indians that checked into the game registered points. It was a different story for PV as Christina Dacey (11 points), Rachelle Filer, and Chloe Markovich accounted for all of the scoring.STEPPING UP … Lillian Brown and Emily Miller were the first two off the bench for the Tribe and combined for a dozen points. Brown has now scored a season-high six points in back-to-back games for the Indians.LEHIGHTONYoung 0-0-0-0, Brown 3-0-0-6, Frey 0-2-2-2, Long 1-0-0-2, Whiteman 2-0-0-4, Blasiak 4-2-2-12, Miller 3-0-2-6, Pantella 0-0-0-0, Faust 3-0-2-6, Buchinsky 1-0-0-2.
