Two arrested, jailed after Schuylkill standoff

Two Schuylkill County men were arrested and jailed following a short standoff that occurred at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the borough of Palo Alto.

State police at Schuylkill Haven identified the two suspects as John Fry, 45, of Bacon St., Palo Alto, and Casey Azbell, 24, of Freiden Manor, Schuylkill Haven.According to troopers Azbell was at Fry's residence along with Nolan Heffner, 23, and Quintan Heffner, 21, both of Minersville, and Brandyn Spece, 26, of Pottsville.Azbell and Spece became involved in an argument over a television and Azbell pulled out a knife. He would not let any of the others in the home leave, except Nolan Heffner, who he wanted to go to Spece's house and steal a television. While Azbell was holding the victims at knife point, he threatened that he was going to kill someone.Once Nolan Heffner was allowed to leave he contacted state police. During the incident Spece attempted to leave but Fry put him in a headlock and would not let him leave.When troopers arrived on scene they saw Azbell in a window of the residence. Troopers made repeated attempts to have Azbell to come outside but he refused. Troopers then entered the residence through a first floor door and located Quintan Heffner and Spece, who ran downstairs and out of the residence. Troopers then encountered Azbell and Fry upstairs. Azbell fought with troopers who were able to gain control of him and take him into custody. No one was reported injured.Azbell was charged with kidnapping, unlawful restraint, simple assault, terroristic threats and harassment. Fry was charged with unlawful restraint and harassment. The two were arraigned before District Judge David A. Plachko, of Port Carbon. Azbell was committed to the county prison after failing to post $75,000 straight cash bail; Fry was committed to the prison after failing to post $25,000 straight cash bail.
