Tamaqua council

Tamaqua Borough Council addressed several procedural items during the regular monthly meeting. Following a lengthy executive session regarding personnel matters, council got down to business, approving the following items:

• A request from the Tamaqua Lions Club to hold the annual Halloween Parade on Oct. 24, with a rain date of Oct. 25.• A five-year agreement with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for winter traffic services. The agreement reimburses the borough for wintertime maintenance of sections of state roads. The borough will receive $50,390 over the five years of the agreement.• A revision to the 2014 CDBG budget, returning $2,985.50 to the original line item it was slated for, road improvements. The funds had been reallocated to adding handicap stairs and a lift to the Bungalow Pool, and the project came in under the projected budget.• A proposal from Alfred Benesch in the amount of $4,200 for the annual inspection of the upper and lower Owl Creek Dams.• A cooperation agreement with the county for the demolition of 252 W. Cottage Ave. The agreement is a necessary step in the process, as part of Schuylkill County's nearly $1.4 million demolition program. The funding was made available through a grant from the state Department of Community and Economic Development.• A proposal from Alfred Benesch in the amount of $3,600 for additional design work on the Bungalow Pool Bathhouse project.• Hired Lindaly Rodriquez as a part-time police officer.• Council also heard from several residents who are concerned about a dilapidated building in the 100 block of Penn Street, that residents said is starting to fall down.Borough manager Kevin Steigerwalt advised council that the DEP project on Brew Street has been completed, except for a few punch list items. The project has had Schuylkill Avenue closed to through traffic for the past few months.Steigerwalt said he is pleased with the project and added that residents in the area have seen their basements drying out.
