Tamaqua Council hires full-time officer

Tamaqua Borough Council hired patrolman Jeremy Sborz as a full-time police officer following an executive session during Tuesday night's council meeting. By hiring Sborz, council fulfilled the borough's budgetary commitment to add two full-time officers to the borough's police force in 2017. Officer Christian DeAngelo was hired at a special meeting in January.

Council also voted to advertise for a new civil service test to fill two vacancies in the police department.Sborz, a current resident of Llewellyn, has been a part time patrolman in Tamaqua since November 2015. He also works part time as a deputy sheriff for the Schuylkill County Sheriff's office and as a patrolman in Minersville.A graduate of Minersville Area High School, he also attended Penn State and Lock Haven Universities, majoring in criminal justice. He completed his Act 120 training in 2015 at Lackawanna College.In other good news for the police department, Chief Rick Weaver announced that the state police have recently completed two audits of the department, one of which reviewed municipal police department plans, policies and procedures, including the storage and dissemination of protected information within their systems, and the other which reviewed the department's juvenile policies. Weaver said there were no discrepancies found in either audit.Council also voted to hire Dinu Dermargosian as a part-time officer.
