Carbon woman admits assaulting police officer, gets prison time

A Carbon County woman admitted in the county court on Friday to assaulting a police officer during a domestic incident.

Dana Marie Getz, 48, of Lehighton, pleaded guilty before Judge Joseph J. Matika to one count each of simple assault and resisting arrest for an incident on Aug. 26, 2016, in Lehighton. In exchange for the plea the district attorney's office dropped charges of aggravated assault, harassment and persistent disorderly conduct.Police were called to 250 S. First St. for an active domestic incident. On scene officers learned that Getz was involved and causing a disturbance. She was taken into custody by Lehighton officer Matthew Bender. As she was being placed in the patrol unit she kicked Bender, injuring the officer.Getz admitted to a long history of mental health issues and had voluntarily entered hospitals for treatment at least 11 times. Matika said Getz also has a "long history of lack of consideration for the police department dating back to the 1990s." He added, "Fortunately officer Bender was not seriously injured."Matika sentenced her to serve seven to one day less 24 months in the county prison and ordered her to get both mental health and drug and alcohol evaluations, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, when released to render 50 hours of community service, must submit a pre-parole plan before being released, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.Getz, who has been in the county prison since the incident, was given credit for 101 days.
