Minsi Scouting council honors adult volunteers

The Minsi Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America, presented Silver Beaver Awards to William Schwab, Jim Korcienski Sr., Dawn Phillips and seven others at the council recognition dinner on Jan. 27 at the East Hills Moravian Church in Bethlehem.

The Silver Beaver is a distinguished service award for registered adult "Scouters" who have made a positive impact on the next generation through their years of service.Presenting the medals were Dr. Arnold Traupman and Glenn Higbie.William Schwab of Lehighton, who earned the rank of Eagle Scout while a youth and his wood badge beads as an adult leader, is currently an assistant council commissioner.Among his accomplishments, Schwab is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, served as North Valley District unit commissioner then later serving as assistant district commissioner, district webmaster and a merit badge counselor.With his computer skills, Schwab provided training and presentations at district roundtables and was an instructor at the Council's University of Scouting.Besides his Scouting volunteer work, Schwab is a volunteer for the Blue Ridge Chapter of Dream Come True and volunteers at the Central Moravian Church, where he is a member. Schwab is solutions engineer for Pencor.Jim Korcienski Sr. is an Eagle Scout who later earned his wood badge beads. He currently is an adviser for Crew 1928, for Settlers Camp, earning a crew leader's key and the Venturing Leader's Training Award. Involved with Saylorsburg Troop 84 since 2007, Korcienski had served as committee chair, as well as, other posts.A recipient of the Founder's Award for outstanding service to the Order of the Arrow, Korcienski is a Vigil member and is on the executive board of the Witauchsoman Lodge. He has been honored with the Witauchsoman Service Award and the Outstanding Arrowman Award.For more than 10 years, Korcienski held the post of Settlers Camp director at Trexler Scout Reservation.A teacher with the Bethlehem Area School District and assistant coach for JV football, Korcienski and his wife Michelle live in Saylorsburg. They have two daughters, Janelle and Justine, and a son, James Jr. who is an Eagle Scout.Dawn Phillips began her journey in Scouting as a den leader in Cub Pack 99 in 1993 where her son was a Cub Scout. She served as a Tiger, Wolf, and Bear den leader, Webelos leader, Cubmaster and committee member.Phillips currently serves as Day Camp Director at Trexler Day Camp. Her tenure there has earned national accreditation for Trexler Day Camp.A recipient of the Pocono District Award of Merit, Phillips also earned her Wood Badge beads and served on the Wood Badge staff. She is currently District Commissioner and was honored with the Commissioners Arrowhead Award and completed the Bachelor of Commissioner Science.Phillips is part of the district training team and has been a district camporee volunteer.A teacher with the Pleasant Valley School District, Phillips and her husband Ernie live in Effort.Her adult son, Domenick is an Eagle Scout, and she has two stepchildren, Annette and Paul.Scott Best of Coplay, Michael Caffrey of Bethlehem, Charlie Chase of Bethlehem, Bill Coles of Emmaus, Jim Klunk of Kutztown, Rev. Gary Marsh of Bethlehem, and Francis Oquendo of East Stroudsburg were also honored with Silver Beaver medals.Outstanding Eagle Scout Awards were presented by council advancement chair Platte Moring and Gerald Sill, who had previously received the honor, to Donald W. Snyder of Orefield, former president of LCCC and previously served in the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, and to Dr. Ronald T. Hersh Jr., a Bethlehem DMD prosthodontist.As Eagle Scouts, they were recognized by the National Eagle Scout Association committee for their outstanding lifetime achievements at the local, state and regional levels.Second Class Scout Tyler Mann of Troop 99, Pocono District and his Scout leader father, Bradley Mann, Troop 99 unit commissioner, where presented with Medals of Merit.While getting ready for school, Tyler Mann heard a crash then found his mother unconscious on the bedroom floor upstairs.After calling for his dad who was outside and 911, Tyler checked his mother for breathing, pulse, then placed her on her side to keep her airway clear until the ambulance arrived as he had been taught at summer camp.Bradley Mann was with his wife shopping when she was stricken with a grand mal seizure. "He lowered her to the floor and once the seizure stopped, he preformed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation as she had stopped breathing.An ambulance arrived and she was put on life support, but fortunately recovered," according to the citation.
