Water heater caused Walmart fire

A water heater was the source of a fire that broke out at the Walmart in Mahoning Township Wednesday afternoon.

Jay Michalik, Assistant Fire Chief, Mahoning Valley Fire Company No. 1, said firefighters were dispatched to the store after 3 p.m. to a report of smoke and flames inside the structure.Michalik said the building was evacuated by store personnel, and that no one suffered injuries as a result of the fire.He said the fire was in a water heater."There was a smoke condition in the hair salon area," Michalik said. "That's where the fire was found in a storage closet."Michalik said the cause is unknown, and the matter remains under investigation.Damage was contained just to the water heater area.Michalik said the fire was under control in a relatively short period of time.Also assisting at the scene were the Lehighton, Franklin, and East Penn fire departments, Mahoning Township Police Department, Mahoning Valley Ambulance, and surrounding fire police units, he said.

Firefighters are on scene at Walmart Wednesday afternoon.
