Lehighton police warn about scam

The Lehighton Borough Police Department is warning people about a phone scam.

The police department was notified that a county resident received a phone call from a person identifying themselves as an agent for the Internal Revenue Service. The person identifying themselves as an agent stated that they owed the Internal Revenue Service $400. The county resident then contacted a local tax collector and was informed that this was a scam phone call.Shortly after she notified the tax collector, the resident received a phone call from what appeared to be the Lehighton Police Department. The phone number on caller ID was the same as the phone number for the Lehighton Police Department and the caller ID showed the name as the "Lehighton Police."The caller stated they were a police officer and there was a warrant for her arrest. They added that police were coming to her house to pick her up.She ended the call and notified the Lehighton Police Department. She was assured that this was not a call from the Lehighton Police Department and there was no warrant for her arrest. It was determined that the call was being made from a "spoofed" telephone line. A spoof telephone line is one in which the call is made from a computer, instead of a telephone. The person making the phone call can use a program to show the incoming call number as that of any person or organization. As an example, a person can make a phone call from another country and have it show that the phone number is a local phone number or from a local police department or other government agency. The phone calls are made through the Internet as opposed to being made from a cellular signal or telephone landline. If residents receive a call like this, contact your local police department. Although a phone number may state that the number is from a local police department, get the correct phone number and contact the department directly.
