Former football player sentenced

A one-time Marian High School football standout who fell from grace after being tackled by drug addiction will serve up to five years in state prison.

Schuylkill County Judge Charles M. Miller on Monday revoked Phillip M. Ryan IV's probation and sentenced him to 2½ to four years.Miller's sentence will be carried out after Ryan completes a six- to 12-month jail sentence imposed on Aug. 4 by Judge John E. Domalakes.Miller revoked Ryan's probation after he repeatedly broke the law and failed to pay court costs and fees as ordered.Domalakes sentenced Ryan, 28, of Tamaqua, to jail on charges of operating a vehicle without a valid inspection sticker, violation of the use of a certificate of inspection, and failing to use a safety belt. The charges were filed by state police at Frackville on Dec. 4, 2015, - Ryan's 27th birthday.He pleaded guilty to the charges on April 19.Most recently, Tamaqua police charged him on July 22, 2016, with resisting arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under suspension-DUI related, and two counts of possession of a controlled substance and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.The last charge was disposed in district court, and Ryan on March 8 pleaded guilty to the remaining charges.Miller sentenced him to 60 days in jail followed by 12 months of probation.Ryan was also charged by the Schuylkill County District Attorney's Office with escape on May 2; by Kline Township police with escape and retail theft on May 13; by Tamaqua police with aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct/engage in fighting, disorderly conduct/hazardous/physical offense, intent to possess a controlled substance he was not authorized to have, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana on June 11.Those charges remain unresolved.According to a previous Times News story, Ryan was an offensive lineman at Marian High School in Hometown, and played at the University of Connecticut.After graduation from college, he signed a contract with the National Football League's Cincinnati Bengals in 2012. However, he was released by the Bengals that same year.
