Mikens was 2-time district champ

Kareem Mickens graduated from Jim Thorpe Area High School in 2010. He was a three-sport standout who competed in cross country, basketball and track where he was a two-time District 11 champion.

Mickens received many awards during his career as a track star at Jim Thorpe. In 2010, he was the District 11 individual champion in the 400 meter dash in a time of 50.90 seconds. He currently is the Jim Thorpe High School record holder in that event. He ran the lead-off leg for the 1600 meter Schuylkill League Champions and District 11 Class 2A 1600 meter relay team that also holds the school record in that event and competed in the PIAA Championships in the same event.He was awarded the "Unsung Hero Award" in basketball; was named the track and field MVP and the school's Athlete of the Year in 2010.After graduation, Mickens enrolled in Keystone College in La Plume, Pennsylvania where he continued his successful career in track and field and cross country.At Keystone, he was a member of the men's cross country team and a four-year member of both the indoor and outdoor men's track and field team.In 2013, his 800 meter relay team and 1600 meter relay team set Keystone College school records both indoors and outdoors. And in his senior year, he was a member of the 1600 meter relay team that set an outdoor record at the Penn Relays with a time of 3:22.74. That relay team also earned Second Team All-Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) honors.Mickens finished his collegiate career as a two-time All-CSAC selection and is now training for the NCAA Outdoor National tournament. He is currently on the roster for the Liberian National Team in the 400 meter dash and will be turning pro after his college career is over.Mickens joins previously announced inductees Celeste Robinson, Dr. Corey Cinicola, Dillon Smith, and the 1989 Babe Ruth League championship team as members of the Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2017.The new members will be inducted at the annual Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame banquet that will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19 at the Jim Thorpe Memorial Hall.
