Palmerton addresses truck traffic

Palmerton Borough Council addressed the concerns of increased truck traffic in town at Thursday's meeting.

Council member Kris Hoffner acknowledged that there has been an uptick in heavy trucks around the former West Plant of the New Jersey Zinc Company, now known as the Northface Development Corporation."We have had several meetings with representatives of the Northface Development Corporation, along with representatives of Impact Environmental, the company overseeing and monitoring the fill operations at the Northface site. We have also met with officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to express our concerns for the safety, health and welfare of our borough residents as a result of the large number of trucks passing through our borough," Hoffner said. The council has also reached out to Mayor Christopher Olivia and the police department for help enforcing vehicle codes. There are currently two patrolman with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation certification to monitor trucks traveling on borough-owned roads, ensuring that the trucks are in compliance with Pennsylvania vehicle codes.Hoffner emphasized that while the council, and the borough as a whole, are in support of the fill operations and development of the property, protecting Palmerton's infrastructure, public health, safety and welfare are their top priority."We will continue to work with all parties involved to support the development of this property without sacrificing the safety and well-being of our residents," Hoffner said.
