Hoffman, Bulldogs get revenge

Kaitlin Hoffman didn't want a repeat.

On Thursday, the Northern Lehigh softball pitcher made sure there wasn't one.Less than two weeks removed from a mercy-rule beating at the hands of rival Northwestern, Hoffman and the Bulldogs got some revenge.Hoffman's pitching played a huge role in the outcome as she fired a two-hitter to lead Northern Lehigh to a 2-0 Colonial League win."That first game was a wake up call," said Hoffman, who was given the start on the mound yesterday after entering in relief the first time the teams played. "It was a punch in the nose."At practice, we were saying, 'Don't let it happen again.' So, we were working hard to keep it from happening again."The Bulldogs' Kate Yesik started the third inning with a single, and Hoffman eventually followed with an RBI single. After Northwestern pitcher Emily Akelaitis struck out a Bulldog hitter, Lauren Hoffman gave her sister more of a cushion with an infield single that scored Kaitlin from second.Once she had the lead, Kaitlin made it difficult for the Tigers to make any type of a comeback. She retired 13 straight Tiger batters after Brooke Wehr's first-inning single. McKayla Wildrick was the only other Tiger to get a hit off the Bulldogs' pitcher the rest of the way."Northwestern has been on a roll," Northern Lehigh coach Bob Hick said. "They took it to us the other week, and today the girls came out and did what they needed to do.Kaitlin has just been doing a phenomenal job for us. She kept their hitters off-balance and she's simply a true competitor."While Akelaitis kept pace with Hoffman the rest of the way, the Tigers could never break through offensively."It stinks that we came out on the losing end of a great game," Northwestern coach Josh Zimmerman said. "You always want to win those, but it just wasn't in the cards for us today."We had our opportunities there. We just couldn't get the key hit. Give Kaitlin a lot of credit. She's a hell of a pitcher."ON THE SPOT … Hoffman finished the game with 12 strikeouts. The Bulldogs' right-hander struck out the side in the first inning, before ending the game the same way. Ofher 110 pitches, 71 were for strikes.STRIKES GALORE … Akelaitis was also on her game, as the Tigers' right-hander threw just 80 pitches, 76-percent of which were strikes. She finished with five strikeouts.No. Lehigh 002 000 0 - 2 7 3Northwestern 000 000 0 - 0 2 0K. Hoffman and D. Hoffman; E. Akelaitis and Wehr. W - K. Hoffman. L - E. Akelaitis.
