Raiders rally past Lehighton

The true identity of a team is revealed when adversity strikes.

On Monday against Lehighton, the Tamaqua softball team overcame missed opportunities and defensive errors to squeak out a 3-2 Schuylkill League Division 1 victory over the Tribe. The Blue Raiders (13-1, 8-1) didn't turn in their best defensive effort of the season, committing three errors, but a late-game rally where Tamaqua scored a run in both the sixth and seventh innings helped them to the win."We battled through some issues today, but the most important thing is that the girls didn't give up," said Raiders head coach Jill Barron. "We've had some trouble fielding and completing the out when teams have bunted against us, and we fought through that today. We made some adjustments and we got better at it, but that's definitely something we need to shore up moving forward."This one was exciting from the onset with both teams exchanging runs early. The Raiders got out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Jada Schellhammer knocked in Miranda Chinchar, who tripled to lead off the inning.Lehighton (6-7, 3-5) evened the score in the third inning when Rachel Serfass knocked in Allison Armbruster, who led off the frame with a bunt single.Missed opportunities were big for both teams throughout the game, but perhaps none was bigger than the Tribe's offensive miscue in the fourth inning with the score knotted at one.Schellhammer, Tamaqua's pitcher, was able to strike out the first batter of the inning but Lexi Kenny, who had three hits in three at-bats, followed with a single. Emily Greene reached on a mishandled bunt attempt, which moved Kenny to third. The Indians offense, however, wasn't able to generate a run. Ryanne Hoffman drove a fly ball to left field, but Kenny wasn't able to tag. Armbruster grounded out to end the inning in the next at-bat."We missed some opportunities today, but the girls played a great game, a very competitive game," said Lehighton head coach Greg Poremba. "We have been playing some good ball as of late. We just have to convert some of these missed opportunities. I think we're getting better and our attitudes are getting better. We could really finish strong here."Lehighton took the lead in the fifth when Lyssa Pantella scored a run on an RBI single by Haley Steigerwalt. But Tamaqua would answer back.In both the sixth and seventh innings, the Raiders dug down deep to come away with the win.An RBI single by Kaitlyn Stauffenburg scored Taylar Donnon in the sixth. In the seventh, Brooke Zellner knocked in Miranda Chinchar, who singled to start the inning. It was an offensive rally that could provide huge dividends for the Raiders in the postseason."We rebounded from a tough start, and we played solid defense over the last two innings," said Barron. "Our girls stepped up late, and in the end this is a win we fought hard to get."PITCHING DUEL ... Both pitchers were good from the circle. The Tribe's Mykayla Engle went seven strong, striking out nine, while allowing eight hits. Schellhammer improved to 11-1 on the season, allowing seven hits and no walks.Tamaqua 100 001 1 - 3 8 3Lehighton 001 010 0 - 2 7 1Schellhammer and Zellner; Engle and Salerno. W - Schellhammer.
