Mitchell leads PV

There will be momentum swings throughout the course of any game.

Successful teams are able to maximize the energy when they have it, and minimize its effects when they don’t.Friday night, both East Strroudsburg South and Pleasant Valley had moments where it appeared either side could take control of their Eastern Pennsylvania Conference game with one sudden scoring burst. With a potential four-game winning streak in jeopardy, the Bears once again found a way to rise to the occasion.Utilizing a massive game from running back Mike Mitchell and the offense, Pleasant Valley powered past East Stroudsburg South, 52-38.“It really, really shows our senior leadership and all of our hard work,” Bears’ head coach Mark Versuk said of the win. “We worked hard and that’s a good team in East Stroudsburg South. Their record might not show it but they have a lot of weapons.“Coach (Ed) Christian has been there (East Stroudsburg South) forever and he does a great job All of their coaches do. But at the end, I think Mike (Mitchell) did a great job of being patient on his own and our linemen did a nice job of opening up some lanes for him to get in. It’s something we’ve been working on and it’s just another thing to add to our offense.”Mitchell was electric from the opening whistle and finished with 374 yards of total offense and four touchdowns.“The offensive line did their job,” Mitchell said. “Our coach (Versuk) kept saying outside zone, and in the beginning I kept pressing it outside, and he said to cut it up and follow the guard and center. “When I realized that, it was wide open every time. They (East Stroudsburg South) would flow to the outside so the center and guard led me up in the middle. Usually I got one-on-one or two-on-one.”The output was necessary on a night that saw the two teams combine for 90 points and 975 yards of total offense. While Pleasant Valley (5-1) accounted for most of that total with 617 yards, the Cavaliers always seemed to have an answer.Trailing 16-8 at halftime, East Stroudsburg South (1-5) matched the Bears score-for-score in the third quarter, to make it 38-30 heading into the final period.Jarrad Pope (27 carries, 176 yards) scored his third touchdown of the night a little over 30 seconds into the fourth quarter and quarterback Jake Cirillo hit John Murphy for the two-point conversion to make it 38-38.But the Bears responded with an 80-yard drive that was capped by Matt Buonforte’s one-yard score to put PV in front 45-38 with 6:45 to play.East Stroudsburg South followed with a three-and-out, and Pleasant Valley put the game away when Brandon Keyes hit Justin Richardson for a 90-yard score on third-and-12 on its next drive to make it 52-38.Keyes finished with 261 yards passing while Richardson had five catches for 144 yards.“Brandon made the throws he had to when we needed him to,” Versuk said. “It was the play of the game. That gave us that cushion we needed to hold on.”TRICKERY… Pleasant Valley scored its first touchdown of the game on a hook-and-lateral play. Keyes hit Richardson for a six-yard completion. Richardson then pitched it back to Mitchell, who sprinted 73-yards for a score on the Bears’ first offensive play of the night.UNDEFEATED… Friday’s win over the Cavaliers kept Pleasant Valley undefeated at home this season. The Bears lone loss came at Allentown Central Catholic in Week 2.
