Thorpe rips SV

SHENANDOAH - There was no need for keeping time, Jim Thorpe's football team was by far superior than Shenandoah Valley Friday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Olympians scored eight touchdowns, rolled up 411 total yards, and was no threat for an out-manned, but game, Blue Devils in a 54-0 thrashing.Speedy Justin St. Hill was at his finest early; he posted three first-half touchdowns on runs of 1, 4 and 40 yards en route to heaping on 133 yards of rushing on just 13 carries. Quarterback Brendan Carroll clicked for an 8-yard scoring strike to Nick Rosahac, and an 11-yard score to Kendall Herron while completing 4-of-10 passes for 60 yards and two touchdowns.Frosh running back CJ Selby continues to emerge as he scooted 48 yards for a touchdown, while Andre Samuel and Roberto Santiago scored in mop up duty with touchdown runs of 4 and 35 yards, respectively."We wanted to set the tone early on, and Pat Elmore had two big interceptions, and we wanted to control their quarterback (Noah Allegreatta) who is a fantastic athlete; it was a great team effort," said Mark Rosenberger, the head coach of the Olympians, who have now run off four straight wins since an opening-night loss."We're a different team since (Schuylkill Haven). We had 17 new kids, now we have 17 kids with a lot more experience. Our hats go off to Shenandoah Valley and that coaching staff, which has done a fantastic job. They keep their kids fighting for 48 minutes. Let's be honest, they're down to a few players and that's a credit to coach (Kevin) Bolinsky and his crew. But I salute our team, we did a great job and now we accept the big challenge next week at home with Blue Mountain."The high-flying Eagles have one loss and it marks the opening game for Jim Thorpe in the newly formed Schuylkill Football League Division 1. But before Thorpe could look ahead, it had to stay focused.Thorpe has an offense that puts a lot of pressure on opposing teams, to which Bolinsky said, "We're a play away or a play of execution away ... but they have all that motion and looks they give you."That translates into jet sweeps and quick hitters up inside. That's where St. Hill excels with his ability to junk his way past defenders."The jet sweep is the staple of our offense ... once we get that thing flowing the counter game works off it," said Rosenberger. "But we need to get better blocking (on the edge). It is a big staple of our offense."Jim Thorpe needed but seven plays to hit the end zone for its first score of the evening, on its second possession of the game. Thorpe fumbled a punt, but Elmore returned the turnover in Thorpe's favor picking off an Allegreatta pass and returning it to the Shenandoah 49. St. Hill went to work in a hurry carrying all seven times and bursting into the end zone on a 1-yard run.Elmore picked off an errant pass once more, this time racing to the Devils' 8. Carroll wasted no time hitting Rosahac with a touchdown pass and St. Hill capped off a two play, 15-yard drive for 21-first quarter points. Colin Jacobs set the tone in that drive with a punt return to the Shenandoah 15.And by the respite, the Olympians were cruising. This time St. Hill dashed 40 yards following a Shenandoah ll then hooked up with Kendall for another six-pack before the half ended with a 35-0 lead.OFF AND RUNNING... Olympians are feeling the swell of momentum since an opening night loss. "We need to keep that going for Blue Mountain," dead-panned Rosenberger, obviously knowing Friday's home contest is huge.DEFENSIVE... Olympians defense has been stout for the past two games. Against the Blue Devils, the run-defense didn't allow a yard and a week earlier only 38 to Minersville.KICKING GAME... Jim Thorpe didn't have to punt in 11 possessions. After scoring its last touchdown, Rosenberger had his team kneel with no attempt on the last touchdown.
