Eagle Scout raises flags above township park

Ray Attewell, the scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 555, said the troop has 17 Life Scouts working toward their Eagle Scout projects. Troop 555 has promoted several Eagle Scouts each year for the past few years.

Attewell expressed his pride in seeing the Scouts of Troop 555 advance to this level.“These boys are out there helping their communities,” Attewell said. “They are not sitting home playing video games. This was a very ambitious project and it took a lot of planning and hard work. This summer our Scouts have worked on a number of really difficult projects. I am very proud of these guys.”Logan Farnell is the next to take that step. Farnell recently completed his project, and Wednesday evening his family invited the troop, the Penn Forest Board of Supervisors, friends, family and local residents to a ceremonial flag raising at the Route 903 Recreation Park.Earlier this year Farnell was given permission by the township to construct two flagpoles, a garden and two park benches. The garden and flagpoles are surrounded by boulders, and the flagpoles are lighted.Farnell took the time Wednesday evening to thank everyone who helped him bring his vision to life.“I would like to thank everyone who has helped me get to this point with Boy Scouts, and especially everyone who helped me with this project,” Farnell said. “I would like to thank Ray Attewell for his continued support to Troop 555 and helping me to get to where I am today in scouting. Also Carol Teets for helping me to get my Eagle Scout proposal together and approved.”Farnell thanked a number of local businesses and business people, including the township for donating the poles and for help in setting the poles. For either donating materials or labor, he thanked Papillon and Moyer Excavating, Walt Bevilacqua, Jeremy Hans, Eggert Excavating, Carefree Lawns, 903 Landscaping, Seltzer’s Nursery, Custom Contracting, Mary Enck Realty and Twin Builders.Farnell thanked state Rep. Doyle Heffley for donating the American flag and the Pennsylvania state flag to the project.Farnell also thanked his friends and family for their help.“I would like to give a big thank you to my brother Mason, cousin Luke Eggert, sister Ella Farnell, Gabe Jussino, Robby Renode and Matt Miller for all their help,” Farnell said. “Also, Nick Trovarello and Mark Knecht for helping to move the benches to the park. “Lastly Farnell thanked his grandparents, Sissy and Butch Reiner and Joan and Jeff Farnell Sr., and his parents.“I hope this will be a symbol for other Scouts to pursue the rank of Eagle Scout and continue on the legacy of giving back to their community,” Farnell said.Farnell is the son of Kathi and Jeff Farnell of Albrightsville and is a senior in the Jim Thorpe Area School District.
