Tamaqua man facing charges after domestic incident

A domestic incident in Tamaqua on Sunday turned into a stand off with police units from multiple municipalities making their way to Spruce Street.

Tamaqua police received a report about a domestic incident at 11:04 a.m.They went to the home and spoke with Thomas Williams, 36, who said he was arguing with his daughter about doing chores. He claimed the girl was being "defiant" and attacked him, at which time he defended himself. When asked if the teen had sustained any injuries, he replied "definitely not," then declined to press any charges.Back at the police station, officers spoke with the daughter and saw noticeable bruising on her cheek. She was also holding her wrist and limping. Her account was that she agreed to do some chores, but stated she didn't want to spend the entire weekend working around the house. She said her father grabbed her and threw her to the ground, twisting her leg. He then grabbed her by the face to pull her upright, covering her mouth making it difficult to breathe. When she tried to get away, he grabbed her by the hair, dragged her up the stairs and threw her on a bed.Williams then called police and the girl's mother, telling her to pick up the teen.Officers went back to the Spruce Street home, where Williams refused to answer the door. Knowing there were two younger children also in the home and fearing for their safety due to the injuries to the victim, officers called for back up.As other units arrived, Williams walked out of the home and surrendered. He was charged with simple assault and resisting arrest and arraigned before duty District Judge James Ferrier. Bail was set at $5,000 straight.Children and Youth Services were contacted about the possible danger to the children, who were all released into the custody of their mother.
