Hauto crash injures five

Emergency responders used hydraulic rescue equipment to cut open an SUV and free trapped occupants, all of whom were injured, in a one-vehicle crash Tuesday not far from the village of Hauto.

Units were dispatched by the Schuylkill Communications Center about 7:15 p.m. to the area of 686 Hauto highway, a location just west of the Schuylkill-Carbon County line and falling within jurisdiction of Nesquehoning borough.

According to those at the scene, a tan-colored Ford Explorer XLT was traveling eastbound when it apparently veered off the roadway, traveled down an embankment and flipped over. The vehicle came to rest in the woods, setting on its side amid trees and tall brush.

Four occupants were taken to a local hospital and a fifth victim was airlifted to a trauma center.

Traffic was halted in both directions for about an hour.

Responding were fire departments from Hauto, McAdoo, New Columbus, Nesquehoning and Hometown.

Ambulances and rescue units were summoned from Tamaqua, McAdoo and Lehighton.

Nesquehoning police are investigating and no other details were available.
