Costa lifts Tigers over NL

Right place at the right time.

That's where Northwestern's Allison Costa was on Wednesday. She took advantage of her opportunity with just a few minutes left in the first overtime session in the District 11 Class 1A field hockey quarterfinals against Northern Lehigh.Costa received a short horizontal flick into the box and knocked home the game winner in sudden-death overtime for the Tigers after a sporadic sequence in the box. The Tigers topped the Bulldogs, 1-0."It's relieving, it was very stressful," said Costa. "It's really great to get a win like this over Northern Lehigh. I love this team, we're all really close and we communicate well."Northwestern opened the game with a flurry of pressure, having four corners within a five-minute sequence in the first half. But Northern Lehigh goalie Annie McIntyre took care of business. She was lights-out during the entire game for the Bulldogs."She has come a long way," said Northern Lehigh head coach Jessica Frew. "She started this year for the first time as a junior. She wasn't so confident last year about coming out and making the big plays in one-on-one situations. She's gotten into those positions, and it showed today. She had numerous saves that were extremely difficult to make."Northwestern was the aggressor in the first half, but Northern Lehigh kicked it up a notch after intermission. The Bulldogs outshot the Tigers by an 8-1 margin in the second half. But Tigers' goalie Taylor Page was equally impressive as her counterpart, making kick-save after kick-save and playing all of the angles appropriately, making it impossible for NL to cash in despite the plethora of chances."Taylor is an excellent goalie," said assistant coach Elizabeth Ache. "She's very aggressive and she did an excellent job. I was just really thankful that the girls were able to pull it together. They utilized all the skills that we've been working on all season and we were able to come out with the win."Ache filled in for head coach Lissa Opolsky and earned a victory during her first-ever head coaching appearance."The girls have been working hard all season and have been an excellent group," Ache said. "It speaks for itself, considering this is my first game as a head coach. Northern (Lehigh) is an excellent opponent. I was happy that our girls were finally able to get one. I don't think we've been to the second round of districts in seven years or so. They are incredibly positive and really care a lot for each other."The momentum shifted back-and-forth in the extra period. Northwestern kept it toward the latter portion of overtime, and made the most of its opportunity when Costa cashed in.Despite the loss, Frew noted that her youthful Northern Lehigh team made significant strides since the summer."I don't know if people expected a whole lot because we graduated 10 seniors," said the Bulldogs' coach. "Realistically, we brought back two, maybe three starters. It's sad for the seniors to call it the end of the season, but there is potential for the younger group. The reality is, we started out with this young mismatch of kids had to come together and they unified. Ultimately, we found our play as a team and it's very rewarding."BRIGHT FUTURE ... Northern Lehigh started four sophomores and a freshman on Wednesday.UP NEXT ... Fifth-seeded Northwestern will take on top-seeded Moravian Academy on Monday.LITTLE TIGER ... Ache was put in charge because Opolsky is pregnant and expecting to have a little Tiger sometime soon.
