NL hosts 109th parade

Families and friends of Lehigh County bundled up for the cold October evening to enjoy a century-old event Saturday.

It’s been 109 years since the first Halloween Parade took over both Slatington and Walnutport’s main streets. The tradition continued over the weekend with more than 60 floats, bands and a new 6 p.m. start time instead of the usual 7 p.m.Northern Lehigh Events Committee Chairman Russel Hallman said the event was paid for by funds raised throughout the year. This year the committee had 12 members.“I think this year everyone took more of an interest because last year they really liked the parade,” Hallman said. Many of the floats were constructed to fit this year’s “Movie Monster” theme. Cub Scout Pack 66 created a mini-haunted graveyard and the Slatedale Lions Club had its very own lion mummy wandering the route with candy.Newcomers New York Skyliners and Wind Gap Blue Eagle Drum and Bugle Corps entertained, with Dreammaker Studios treating the audience to a small sample of the horror house it runs in Lehighton. The top two floats in the eight categories will receive a small cash reward along with bragging rights until the 110th event next October. Winners are expected to be announced this week.
