Perschy leads Bombers

There’s no substitute for experience.

Especially at the quarterback position. So on a rainy Senior Night at Palmerton, it was only fitting that Garrett Perschy directed his team to a decisive 47-14 Colonial League victory over Salisbury.Perschy threw for 234 yards and three touchdowns, and also ran for a pair of scores to lead the Blue Bombers.“Garrett’s very poised,” said Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak. “He’s a three-year captain and a three-year starter. It’s a luxury having him there, making the signals, making the calls, making the reads.“He keeps everybody calm and he really is that poised. He’s unflappable in pressure situations.”Perschy didn’t face many pressure situations Friday night, but he did come up big when it counted. The senior signal-caller completed three passes on third-and-longs during different scoring drives, ran for a conversion on a third down, and moved the chains on a pair of fourth-down conversions — one on a fake punt.“No matter what the yardage is we need, we’re capable of completing anything and possibly even breaking it for a touchdown,” said Perschy. “That’s our mentality. Every play for us could be a big play.“We don’t worry about the weather conditions, because that’s something we can’t control. We have to do what we need to do to win ... If we’re in second-and-long or third-and-long and we need to throw the ball, we’re capable of that. We knew it was going to rain tonight ... Our receivers had the mentality that they were going to catch anything that came near them.”After Perschy gave his team a lead with a 2-yard run early in the game, one of his receivers lived up to that mentality.Jared Mooney got behind a Falcon defender and pulled in a 43-yard toss from Perschy to extend the advantage to 13-0.After a turnover, Perschy connected with another receiver (Mike Eckhart) from 18 yards away to make it 19-0.“The kids made plays and executed,” said Walkowiak. “You always like the big play, but at the same time, when you get a lead you like to take time off the clock and that’s what we were able to do. We protected the ball and kept the chains moving.”The Bombers countered a Salisbury score in the second quarter by grinding out an 18-play, 75-yard drive. Perschy completed the long march with a 1-yard scoring run. The drive took seven minutes and gave Palmerton a 27-7 lead at the break.Another senior, Mike Stasko, helped put the finishing touches on the victory with a short scoring run in the third quarter.“We’re moving in the right direction,” said Walkowiak. “We had a lot of positives, but there are still areas we need to shore up. We’re just trying to get better every day.”“We started off the season slow ... but it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish,” said Perschy. “We’re rolling right now. We’re starting to execute, and we’re getting hot at the right time.”WELCOME BACK ... Eckhart missed last week’s game due to sickness, but returned to the lineup and made his presence felt with four catches for 54 yards and an interception on defense. “It was great to see him step up and get into the mix,” said Walkowiak.SPREADING THE BALL AROUND ... Perschy threw the ball to six different receivers, something the Bombers hope to do every game. “Our philosophy is we’re going to spread the ball around offensively,” said Walkowiak. “We’re trying to get people touches. Mooney also had a very good game, and Chuck Burke had a big catch to get us into scoring position. All-around I thought we executed pretty well.”
