D-11 races heating up

District 11 held a conference call Monday afternoon to discuss playoff scenarios heading into week nine of the football season. With six classifications this season, things appear to be clearer than in the past.

This season, Class 3A and 6A will have eight-team brackets while 1A, 2A, 4A and 5A will have four qualifiers in each bracket.A breakdown of each class is below.1A1. Williams Valley 7-1, 2. Tri-Valley 7-1, 3. Marian Catholic 5-3, 4. Nativity BVM 1-7, 5. Shenandoah Valley 0-8.The top three teams have all clinched. Williams Valley and Tri-Valley play this weekend for the top seed. Marian more than likely will be the third seed. The Colts have an outside shot to move up to the No. 2 seed and get a home game in the semifinals, but they would need to win their final two games and have either WV or TV lose their final two games. The battle for the fourth seed will be clearer after this week, with Nativity leading the way at the moment.2A1. Schuylkill Haven 8-0, 2. Palmerton 3-5, 3. Mahanoy Area 3-5, 4. Minersville 3-5, 5. Catasauqua 2-6, 6. Panther Valley 2-6Schuylkill Haven has clinched the top spot. No other team has clinched a berth yet, although Palmerton is close and would probably do so with one more win. The Bombers are also in great shape to earn a home game in the semis. Mahanoy Area and Minersville own the last two playoff spots as of right now, but Catasauqua would steal one of those spots with two wins or with one win if either Mahanoy or Minersville lost their final two games. Panther Valley, which plays Mahanoy this week and Minersville the following week, could get in with two victories and at least one Catty loss. The Panthers would almost definitely be in with two wins and two losses by at least two of the other contenders (Mahanoy, Minersville, Catty).3A1. Notre Dame GP 7-1, 2. Pen Argyl 6-2, 3. Palisades 6-2, 4. North Schuylkill 5-3, 5. Jim Thorpe 5-3, 6. Tamaqua 4-4, 7. Lehighton 4-4, 8. Northern Lehigh 3-5, 9. Salisbury 2-6, 10. Pine Grove 1-7, 11. Wilson 0-8The top five have all clinched playoff berths. Tamaqua, Lehighton and Northern Lehigh can all clinch berths with one more win. Tamaqua finishes the season with North Schuylkill this week and Marian in Week 10. Lehighton has Blue Mountain and Jim Thorpe to close the season. Northern Lehigh finishes with Northwestern and Palmerton. Salisbury has to defeat Palmerton and Southern Lehigh for a chance to sneak in. One more Salisbury loss would clinch spots for Tamaqua, Lehighton and Northern Lehigh regardless of the results of their own games. Jim Thorpe, Lehighton and Tamaqua all still have a chance to sneak into the top four and earn a home game, although that would take a couple of wins and at least one North Schuylkill loss.4A1. Bethlehem Catholic 7-1, 2. Allentown Central Catholic 7-1, 3. Pottsville 7-1, 4. Saucon Valley 7-1, 5. Blue Mountain 6-2, 6. Northwestern 4-4, 7. Bangor 2-6Becahi is the only team that has clinched a berth so far. That leaves four teams (Central Catholic, Pottsville, Saucon Valley and Blue Mountain) battling for the final three spots. Central Catholic is in the best shape, needing just one more victory to clinch and playing Allen (1-7) this week. Pottsville (Jim Thorpe, North Schuylkill); Saucon Valley (Notre Dame, Palisades); and Blue Mountain (Lehighton, Schuylkill Haven) all have very difficult closing schedules. Northwestern is eliminated.5A1. Whitehall 4-4, 2. Southern Lehigh 6-2, 3. East Stroudsburg South 3-5, 4. East Stroudsburg North 2-6All four teams are in the playoffs. Whitehall gets the top seed with wins in their last two games against Stroudsburg and Northampton. But if the Zephyrs lose one of them and Solehi wins out against Catasauqua and Salisbury, the Spartans would come out as the top seed.6A1. Emmaus 7-1, 2. Parkland 6-2, 3. Pleasant Valley 7-1, 4. Liberty 5-3, 5. Stroudsburg 6-2, 6. Nazareth 4-4, 7. Easton 4-4, 8. Freedom 4-4, 9. Pocono Mountain West 2-6, 10. Dieruff 2-6, 11. Allen 1-7, 12. Pocono Mountain East 1-7, 13. Northampton 0-8Emmaus, Parkland and Pleasant Valley have officially clinched. Liberty, Stroudsburg, Nazareth, Easton and Freedom will almost definitely round out the field. Pocono Mountain West has an outside shot of getting in if it finishes the season with wins over East Stroudsburg North and Pocono Mountain East. It would also need Easton (games remaining against Emmaus and Nazareth) and Freedom (games remaining with Becahi and Liberty) to both lose out. Should that magic happen, PMW still could find themselves on the outside looking in depending on the outcome of several other games.************OLYMPIANS' OFFENSIVE TOOL ... Jim Thorpe gained a big Schuylkill League win over Tamaqua last Friday, as the Olympians used the passing game to help earn the victory.Thorpe's Shawn O'Toole caught three touchdown passes from Brendan Carroll in the 26-18 triumph. O'Toole's three TD catches are a rare occurrence at his school. Since 1987, a span of 318 games, this was just the sixth time that a JT player had three touchdown catches in a game. Khaaliq Lynch last accomplished the feat on Oct. 22, 2011 against Schuylkill Haven. Kysheem Lynch did it twice in 2008 (Sept. 5 against Mahanoy Area and Oct. 17 versus Haven), while Joe Butchko also did it twice in 1991 (Oct. 8 against Nativity and Oct. 26 versus Freeland).************NEARY SCORES BOTH WAYS ... Marian rolled to a Schuylkill League victory over Shenandoah Valley last Friday, scoring eight touchdowns in the 56-14 win.Two of those scores came from Mike Neary. The senior reached the end zone on a 23-yard run and a 33-yard interception return. Since 1987, a span of 345 games, Neary is just the eighth Colt player to score on both offense and defense in the same game. The others to tally touchdowns both ways include Lukas Damian (Sept. 21, 2013), Dylan Quark (Sept. 3, 2011), Chris Decker (Nov. 18, 2006), Kevin McNavage (Sept. 23, 2005), Scott Holloman (Oct. 12, 1996), Jason Fegley (Nov. 14, 1992) and Joe Gillespie (Oct. 12, 1990).************BULLDOGS POST SHUTOUT ... Northern Lehigh posted a win over Salisbury last Friday, shutting out the Falcons by a 28-0 score. The Bulldogs had gone 51 straight games without a shutout. The last time Nolehi blanked its opponent before Friday was an identical 28-0 score on Nov. 12, 2011 against North Schuylkill in the semifinal round of the District 11 Class AA playoffs. The Bulldogs halted the second longest streak among Times News teams without a shutout. Panther Valley currently has the longest area streak of games without posting a shutout. It has been 70 straight games for the Panthers since its last blanking - a, you guessed it, 28-0 win over Minersville.************MEMORABLE NIGHT FOR BEARS ... It was a record-setting night for Pleasant Valley last Friday when it defeated East Stroudsburg North by a 66-26 score. In the high-scoring affair, PV's Brandon Keyes threw five touchdown passes to reach 27 for the season. That broke the school mark of 23 set by Derek Walling in 2010. It also tied the all-time Times News record for TD passes in a season, equaling the 27 that Jim Thorpe's Corey Cinicola tossed in 2008.Four of Keyes' scoring tosses went to Justin Richardson, who now has 15 touchdown catches this season. That figure broke the school mark of 12 by Andrew Romeo in 2012 and also eclipsed the all-time Times News record of 14, which was set by Panther Valley's Tom Miller (1988), Lehighton's Shane McEvoy (2007), and Northwestern's Cam Richardson (2014).Justin Richardson also had a touchdown run (on a lateral) on Friday night, giving him five touchdowns in a game. That tied a school record for TDs in game with Austyn Borre (2012) and Dean Borger (1974).
