Schuylkill commissioners

Schuylkill County’s battle against blight advanced Wednesday as commissioners approved several demolition related projects.

At the request of Michelle O’Connell of the grant writer’s office, they approved a cooperation agreement with West Mahanoy Township for a demolition project at 129 W. Girard Ave.

Commissioners also approved an extension date to May 20 for a demolition project at 124 A St., Girardville.

The contractor performing the demolition is Northeast Industrial Services.

The county is also seeking bids for demolition projects in Palo Alto, Tamaqua, Ashland, Tower City and Shenandoah.

Bids will be due in the controller’s office by 4 p.m. April 30. They will be opened at 9 a.m. May 2, with a tentative award date of May 9.

In other matters, the commissioners acted on the following items:

• Accepted the resignations from the Mental Health/Developmental Services advisory board of George Harris, Ashland; Frank Menne, Pottsville; Helene Creasy, Shenandoah; and Denise Grajewski, Shenandoah.

• Approved the reappointment of prison Warden Eugene Berdanier to a three-year term as a member of the MH/DS advisory board effective Jan. 1, 2017, through Dec. 31, 2019.

• Approved the reappointments of John Handler, Tamaqua; Joan Kitsock, Pottsville; Patrick Farrell, Orwigsburg; and Christine Wiekrykas, Mahanoy City to three-year terms on the board effective Jan. 1, 2018, through Dec. 31, 2020.

• Approved the appointment of the Rev. Mark Brooks, Bethesda E.C. Church, Schuylkill Haven, to a three-year term on the board effective Jan. 1, 2018, through Dec. 31, 2020.
