Area doubles teams ousted

Doubles teams from Pleasant Valley, Tamaqua and Jim Thorpe were all eliminated on the opening day of the District 11 Tennis Tournament on Monday.

GIRLS TENNISDistrict 11 DoublesPleasant Valley's doubles team of Masani Francis and Haley White gained an opening-round win before falling to the top-seeded duo at the District 11 Girls Tennis Doubles Championships.Francis and White posted a straight-set, 6-3, 6-4, victory over Freedom's team of Olivia Chuggani and Anjali Chuggani during the Class AAA competition. In the second round, however, the Bears met Easton's No. 1-seeded team of Ireland Amato and Sophia Amato. The Amatos backed up their top seed by cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win.Two teams from the Times News area participated in the Class AA field, with both losing in the opening round.Tamaqua's Brooke Williams and Keyla Sez split their first two sets with Pen Argyl's Marya Samerdzhieva and Hannah Asaka, but the Blue Raiders dropped the deciding super tiebreaker to fall 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 10-6.Leanne Van Essendelft and Angelica Uzar of Jim Thorpe also competed, losing 6-2, 6-1 to Notre Dame's Danielle Hibshman and Lydia Yuhas.GIRLS SOCCERWeatherly-Jim ThorpeJim Thorpe scored seven goals in the first half during a victory over Weatherly, 9-1.Alyssa Dulski, Eve Morris, and Jackie Condly each scored twice for the Olympians.Sarah Gabel, Monae Bullock, and Nalani Lewis all scored once for Thorpe.Nalani Lowman scored Weatherly's lone goal.BOYS SOCCERNorthumberland-WeatherlyWeatherly's Michael Kennelly scored a goal and also made 17 saves to help lead Weatherly to a 2-1 non-league win over Northumberland Christian.The Wreckers, who improved to 8-7-1, also received a goal from Paul Eckert and an assist from Chris Smith.Andrew Groninger scored the only goal for the Warriors.VOLLEYBALLMahanoy Area-TamaquaTamaqua swept Weatherly 25-10, 25-15, 25-18.Carly Kosciolek led the Raiders with nine kills and five digs. McKenzie McVicker had six blocks and four kills, while Andrew Iacoviello had 10 digs.The Tamaqua JV team also defeated the Golden Bears, 2-0.Weatherly-Jim ThorpeJim Thorpe swept Weatherly 25-19, 25-8, 25-13.Kelsey Carroll led the Olympians with 17 assists and four kills. Alex McGinley had eight digs, Mackenzie Rosenberger had six kills, and Alyssa Stamets supplied seven kills.Samantha Andreuzzi led Weatherly with five digs. Necarlly Serratta had four service points, while Emily Zoscin had four service points and two kills.The Olympians also celebrated Kelsey Carroll registering her 700th career assist, as well as Alexandra McGinley's 800-plus career digs.The Thorpe JV team topped the Wreckers, 2-0.JR. HIGH BASKETBALL8TH GRADETamaqua-WeatherlyTamaqua defeated Weatherly, 32-24.Sophia Boyle led the Raiders (5-12) with 10 points.
