Weatherly board approves events

The Weatherly Area School Board last week approved a handful of events to take place on campus.

The Weatherly Police Department will host a heroin epidemic town hall meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the middle school cafeteria.The Senior Parents Organization "Class of 2017" will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 24 in the middle school cafeteria to organize the all-night party.The National Honor Society will host a blood drive from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 10 in the high school gymnasium.Weatherly Youth Basketball league will meet from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from November through March at the high school gymnasium for instruction and recreation. Saturday practices and weather makeup times will be announced.The school board has created a new curriculum/technology committee that will meet at 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month before the regular board meeting.The agendas for the meetings will include curriculum discussions, updates on middle school clubs, field and class trip requests and funding for the events. Matthew vonFrisch serves as committee chairman while joined by board members Brandon Pugh, William Knepper and Superintendent/K-2nd grade Principal Thomas McLaughlin and Elementary Principal/Special Education Coordinator Sandra Slavick. Parents encouraged to attend to talk about K-12 core curriculum for the upcoming school year.The first budget/finance committee meeting is scheduled for Nov. 9 immediately following the regular board meeting.The board approved four substitutes for the 2016-2017 school year: Ardan O'Brien for secondary education, Kristin Parker for emergency permit, Margaret Burczy for cafeteria aide and Tanya Gordick for the teacher's aide position. The district is still accepting application for the position of high school principal.
