Schuylkill Haven routs Panthers

It wasn't what Panther Valley head coach Matt Davis expected of an undefeated Schuylkill Haven football program in the opening quarter of Friday night's game.

But after those first 12 minutes the Hurricane team Davis was expecting made an appearance, dominating the rest of the game en route to a 61-7 homecoming win over the Panthers."They (Schuylkill Haven) definitely did not play a very clean game early on," Davis said. "They left the door open for us and we took advantage of it a little bit."But, at the same time, we left points out there that we would have made it a lot more interesting. It was very uncharacteristic of them to put the ball on the ground."After failing to take advantage of Schuylkill Haven's first two first-quarter fumbles, they put it on the ground a third time in the opening period and the Panthers made the most of it.Hunter Kennedy placed a perfectly thrown ball over Danny Gilberry's shoulder as he strode into the end zone for an early lead. After the final horn sounded to end the first though, it may have sounded to let those in attendance at Panther Valley Stadium knows that soon there was a list of several Hurricanes about to touch ground.Mike Kalyan scored twice on the ground, while Danny Lozada followed suit with a rushing touchdown to give the Hurricanes a 21-7 lead at half. After half, it wasn't even close as the Hurricanes scored on the ground four more times, added a punt return for a touchdown and then ended the scoring with a fumble recovery for a touchdown."Once they got rolling, they're tough to stop," Davis said. "Our kids battled for awhile. But, in the end, it got away from us. I don't think they attempted a pass all night and we knew that. That's Schuylkill Haven football. They're a program that 12 months out of the year they work extremely hard."They get what they deserve. They work hard to be where they're at. They're 8-0 and that's a quality program over there with a bunch of kids that want to win."JUMPED ON LOOSE BALL ...After the Hurricanes' Preston Gehring recovered his own botched punt, Tristan Blasko and Xander Skoutelas-Kern got their hands on two of the three fumble recoveries in the opening quarter for the Panthers.BEAST ON THE LOOSE ...The Hurricanes have a three-headed monster with Danny Lozada, Mike Kalyan and Preston Gehring in their backfield. However, it was Kalyan's night to shine as the Hurricanes' running back was the lone individual to surpass a 100-yards on the ground. Kalyan finished with 17 carries for 137 yards and two touchdowns.FORGOT ABOUT THE FIRST ...After fumbling on all three of their possessions in the opening quarter, the Hurricanes went on to score on every single offensive series they had after that. From the second to the fourth quarter, the Hurricanes reached pay dirt on five consecutive drives.
