Carbon County court - drugs

Three defendants entered guilty pleas to drug-related charges on Thursday in Carbon County court.

President Judge Roger N. Nanovic accepted pleas from the following:Malvin Roy Meckes Jr., 34, of Kunkletown, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine. In exchange for the plea the district attorney's office dropped a charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.Meckes was arrested on Aug. 7, 2015, by state police at Lehighton following a traffic stop along Delaware Avenue in Palmerton. Meckes was a passenger in the vehicle and was found to have two packets of heroin in his possession.Meckes is currently an inmate in the Monroe County prison serving a sentence in a domestic relations case. His term runs to June 29.Nanovic sentenced him to serve 45 days to 12 months in prison and imposed zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use. He was given credit for 12 days spent in jail on the charge. The term runs concurrent with Monroe County.Nestor Ariel Alvarez, 22, of Slatington, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.He was arrested on Nov. 5, 2015, along Route 248 eastbound by Palmerton police following a traffic stop. Alvarez was a passenger in the vehicle and was found to have drug paraphernalia.Alvarez was on probation at the time and it was revoked, and he is currently serving a prison term that runs to July 7.Nanovic placed him on probation for a year consecutive to his current sentence. He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use.Michael Thomas Ross, 29, of Bangor, formerly of Albrightsville, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on Nov. 23, 2015, in the 900 block of Oak Street by Jim Thorpe police following a traffic stop. Ross was a passenger in the vehicle and was found with a pipe used to smoke marijuana.He was placed on probation for a year and ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, and have no contact with any of the other four people in the vehicle at the stop.Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee.
